SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,784, dated May 9, 1882. Application filed March 8, 1882. (No model.) i

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY SWARTZ, ofGreenville, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio,

have invented anew and useful Hair-Grimper,

of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a device for producing crimps or waves in the human hair.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hair-crimper embodyin g my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines a: a: and y 3 respectively, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a perspeciive view, showing a modification in which the base-plate is omitted. Figs. 5 and 6 are sections on the lines w w and y 51 respectively, looking in the direction of the arrow.

A is a rectangular plate of concave-convex transverse section, adapting it to fit the human forehead. The convex surface of said plate has the represented crenelated form,consisting of a. congeries of semi-cylindrical ridges, B, separated by intervening furrows O.

Hinged at one end of each furrow to a rod, E, is a clamp, D, of spring-wire, preferably of spring-steel, whose free extremity takes the form of a catch-hook, F, and handle G, by means of which each clamp may be independently and securely locked in its effective position.

To use the crimper the clamps are all thrown back, and the crenelated plate A B being passed under the tress of hair to be crimped, with the ridges at right angles to the hair, the clamps are brought down over the hair and latched, as shown in Fig. 3, and at H H H in Fig. 1. Having performed its duty, the instrument is removed by the unlatching of the clamps.

1n the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 the rectangular plate A is dispensed with, and metal strips D, hinged at one extremity, E, directly to the furrow (l of the corrugated plate B, and whose free ends take the form of catch-hooks F and handles G, are substituted for the clamp-wires D.

I claim as new and of my invention- The combination of plate B, having convex faces, furrows between the faces, and spring clamps hinged at one end of the furrows, and having catch-hooks and handles at their free extremities, as set forth.
