BLACKSMITHS TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,127, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed August 19, 1889. Serial No. 321,317. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN TYLER SPENCER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Fontana, in the county of Miami and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Blacksmiths Tongs, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in blacksmiths tongs with bent or hooked jaws at the end and straight handles or reins; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to obtain a firm hold of plowshares, shovel-plows, and other flat iron or steel, and to prevent them from springing while hot, with the double jaws, and, second, to lessen the probability of burning the hand while handling hot iron or steel. I attain these objects by the addition and change as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents the tongs and my improvements, with a detailed view of the tongs with all their parts.

D is the handles or reins, and E is where the handles or reins are bent. A is a part of or hooked jaws at the end.

b consists of two pieces of iron or steel welded to D, just in front of E, where the handles or reins D are pressed apart, the jaws A and B are opened, a plowshare, shovelplow, or any fiat iron or steel placed in the jaws A and B, and b may be firmly grasped and held by pressing the handles or reins D close together.
I am aware that prior to my invention blacksmiths tongs have been made with bent I therefore do not claim the combination as represented only in part.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An article of manufacture consisting of a pair of blacksmiths tongs having a bent nose and bent handles and a pair of extra jaws l), welded to the handles between the pivot and bend in the handles, and in line with the bent nose, substantially as described and shown.
