TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,447, dated October 18, 1881.
Application filed May 16,1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE M. GILLETT and JOHN TUCKER, of Allerton, in the county of Wayne and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Tongs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention isthe production of tongs whereby heated plowshares may be conveniently handled for weldingand for other purposes.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved tongs, representing the same as thev appear while holding the plowshare. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tongs. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. 4 is a crosssection taken on the line a w of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The jaw A of the tongs is formed with the broad face a and with the upturned lip or flange a, to fit the face and side of the shares, 'as shown in Fig.1. The jaw B is formed with the face b and the upward hooked or bent extension b, which extension is provided with the screw 0, for adjusting the tongs to fit shares of different sizes.
The handles A A of the tongs may be held together for firmly securing the share between the jaws by the ring 0, which is adapted to be placed over them, as shown.
With the tongs thus constructed the hot shares may be handled for any purpose with great convenience and ease.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The tongs herein shown and described, consisting of the jaw A, formed with the broad face a and the flange a, and thejaw B,formed with the face I) and the upward-hooked extension 1), whereby the jaws are adapted to clasp and hold plowshares, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The jaw B, formed with the face I) and the upward-hooked extension I), having the screw e,in combination with the jawA, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
