UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC A. PERRY, OF OXFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE IMPLEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,243, dated May 11, 1875; application filed April 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo A. PERRY, of Oxford, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stove Implements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a front view of my implement, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to tongs for use in connection with cooking-stoves 5 and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of an inside purchase-lug on the inner face of one of the shanks, near the biting ends, and extending in a transverse direction inward and downward toward the opposite shank, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, A A designate two bars of metal, connected together by a pivot, a, about which the said arms have free play. These bars A A, thus connected, form a pair of tongs. d d designate the arms of said tongs, and d d the griping parts thereof. The free extremities of the arms 62 d may be terminated in any suitable manner. At the griping end of the bar A is formed a tongue, B, perpendicular thereto, of suitable length, and of such shape as that it will play freely between the bars of a grate from below, or may be used as a poker or shaker through apertures in the upper parts of a stove. This tongue B, in combination with arm (1, constitutes a poker or shaker. At the heel of this tongue-I construct a longitudinally-oblong notch, b, which may be serrated, and which I use, in combination with arm at, as. a litter to place on or remove from a stove any utensil having flanged. edges. Near the extremity of the griping-arm A, on the inside of the shank d, and a little distance above its biting-j aw c, which is curved or bent outward, I form a purchase-lug, c, which is bent inward and downward, extending in a transverse direction toward the shank of the opposite jaw of the tongs. This lug 0 serves an important purpose in lifting heavy articles, as,
when caught upon the edge of such an article, the prying leverage upon, the pivot of the tongs is relieved, and their biting ends, having a strong compressive hold, are enabled to keep the article from slipping out of its seat under the purchaselug.
It will be seen from the above description that I have an implement in which I assemble the several parts of tongs, shaker, poker, litter, and damper, turned in one convenient and useful form, and that it constitutes an article of every-day use in every family using a stove.
The jaws e e of the tongs, when closed, serve as graspers, and they may be serrated on their inner surfaces, and also notched, thus performing a very useful function in seizing and removing from a floor any burning substance which may have fallen from a stove.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a pair of liftin g-tongs, of the rigid prong c, forming a part of one of the jaws, and extending inwardly and downwardly therefrom toward the other to form a purchase, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC ALLEN PERRY.
