UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALGERNON S. BANGS, 0F AUGUSTA, MAINE.
WINDOW-FRAME POCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,637, dated May 9, 1882. Application filed January 13, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALGERNON S. BANGS, of Augusta, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Frame Pockets,
.that closes the pocket-opening is beveled off at each end, and the ends thus beveled are securednt the back or inside of the frame at one end by a. screw or nail, and at the opposite or outside end in a similar manner, which latter fastening is taken out when the pocket cover is removed. The objection to this method of securing is that the inside end is not accessible after the window-frame is secured in place. In the event of the giving way of the inside fastening it is very difficult to remedy the dei'ect, rendering it necessary toremo-ve the easing. Again, the fastening at one end is never sufficientlystrongto properlysecurethepocketcover, thus rendering it liable to give wayunder undue pressure.
It is the object of my invention to obviate these objections; and to this end myinvention consists in constructing the piece that closes the opening ot' the pocket with a bevel atone end and a groove in the other end, which groove tits upon a corresponding dowel secured tothe frame of the window, so that by inserting the said piece into the opening of the pocket it will be firmly secured at one end by the dowel and at the other end by means of a screw or pin.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a window-frame, showing the position of the pocket. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a viewof the piece that COVBI s the pocket-opening.
Brepresents theporlion ofthe window-frame containing the pocket through which the sash-' weight is passed to be attached to the cord.
A is the pocket cover or piece which closes the opening. It is made with a bevel, E, at one end. In the oppositeend is formed a groove, D, extending lengthwise across the same, as shown in Fig. 3. In one end of the opening of the window-frame is fixed a dowel, D, as shown in Fig. 2. This dowel may be placed either at the upper or the lower end of the opening, and the piece A correspondingly fittedin the same butIgenerellypreferplacing it in the upper end, as shown in the drawings.
The grooved end D of the piece A may be beveled at its upper end in the direction of its width, as shown in Fig. 1, for the purpose of retaining itmore firmly in position in the frame.
In fitting the piece A in place the upper or grooved end, D, is placed upon the dowel D, which may be of metal or wood, and the lower beveled end, E, is fitted in the corresponding beveled portion of theframe, whereit is secured by a screw or pin, F, as shown.
By the use of a dowel, as shown, I effect a crossing of the grain of the wood, which serves to strengthen it and obviates completely the liability to split out, as would be the casewith a square tenon and mortise; and, again, the
