- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

EMIL HANTSOHE, JR., OF NEViT YORK, N. Y.

WINDOW-BLIND.

- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,542, dated April 15, 1890.

Application iiled January 22, 1890. Serial No. 337,719. (No model.)

i a sectional elevation of a window-blind provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 4r, Fig. l; Fig. 3, a

transverse section on line y y, Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a perspective view-of the cap d, and Fig. 5 a bottom view thereof.

rlhe letter d represents the blind-frame, one of the stiles d of which-is slotted longitudinally to receive the blind-operating m echanism.

h b are the slats, pivoted by pivots c at one end in the usual manner, while at the other end they carry flattened tenons c', that are embraced by caps d, made ot' malleable metal. The caps d are of he form shown in Fig. +t that is to say, they are provided with two jaws d', a toothed crown d2, and outwardly-projecting pivot d3. The two jaws d are slipped over the flattened tenen c', and are then pressed together to tightly grasp the tenen between them.

For the passage and recept-ion ot the caps d the slotted stile a is provided with the enlarged openings '0.2, which, however, do not form the bearings in which the iat-s turn. These bearings are formed hy a plaie e, placed ing pivots als, bearing-plate within stile a', and which is perforated in line with each pivot (Z5. The several perforations receive the ends of pivots d3, Fig. 1, so as to permit the pivots to turn freely therein.

For the proper operation of the slats I employ a rack f, placed within the slotted stile a. and engaging the toothed crowns dg of the caps d. The rack carries a it may be moved up or down to open or close the slats.

It will be seen that by the use ot the bearing-plate e, placed within the hollow body of stile of, the openings d? in suoli stile are relieved from the function of serving as bearings for the slats. As these openings are necessaril .v large, and therefore apt to wear out in use, it is of importance to take any strain or wearing contact away from them. i

' By the use Qt the two jaws CZ', that grasp the tenen e from opposite sides, I obtain that advantage over an ordinary socket that I may tightly press the jaws against the. tenon to firmly unite. the parts and prevent dead motion, and that the body of the tenen need not be unnecessarily cut down and weakened.

rlhe combination of a blind-frame having slotted stile a', that is provided with openin gs a2, with slats l), toothed caps d, received by openings CL2 and having rearwardly-.extende within stile a and a rack f for and receiving such pivots,

substantially as engaging the toothed caps, specified.
