Description

H. BARTH. Double WindoWhSashes.
NTOR
Patented July 9,1878'.
N PETERS. FHOTU-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTONy D (2v UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY BARTH, OF CINCINNATI, OIIIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE-WINDOW SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,825, lated July 9,1H79; application led April 20, 1878.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it. known that I, HENRY BARTH, of Oincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double Sashes, of which the following is a specification Heretofore double windows have been made by simply placing two sets of sashes in a window-frame, each set acting independently.
-ut when arranged in this manner the sashes were extremely inconvenient to operate, and to obviate this difficulty I attached both the lower sashes together and both the upper sashes together in the following manner: To the meeting-rail of one sash are secured lips having projections or pins thereon to engage in sockets in the meeting-rail ofthe other sash. A nut in the sill-piece of the sash receives a screw-bolt or other similar device, which traverses the auxiliary sash and secures the two firmly together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view representing a portion of a window provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a pair of lower sashes constructed according to my improve ment.
A may represent a portion of a windowf'rame. B represents one of the upper sashes. O represents the lower sash proper, confined in customary guides in the frame-Stiles. D represents the inner or auxiliary sash, having lips c adapted by their projections or pins to engage in sockets in the sash, which lips when the said auxiliary sash is placed in front of the sash proper, causes the former to rest upon the latter. This inner or auxiliary sash is preferably slightly narrower than the outer sash, and rests within the window frame against the beading, there being no necessity for the formation of grooves within which to slide the inner sash, the fastenin gs at the top and bottom securing the two sashes together, permitting their simultaneous movement.
A nut, g, in the sill-piece of the sash proper, receives a screw, f, which traverses that of the auxiliary sash, and this, when so desired, enables the two to be held firmly and operated together as if they were a single sash. When the upper sash is double, its two members may be united by the same means as described for the lower sash.
I claim as new and of my invention- The combination, with a double sash, of the lips e, adapted to engage the meeting-rail of the permanent sash, nut g, and screw f, or their equivalents, for enabling the two component sashes to be operated in conj nnction when desired, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
IIEIIRY BARTH.
