m0 JZ WUJVESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT W. LOWNES, OF DENISON, IO'WA.
sPmNe BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,170, dated May 2, 1882. Application filed August 2,1881. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT WV. IIOWNES, of Denison, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appel tai'ns to -lnake and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a top plan view of my improved spring bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a side View, and Fig. is a transverse sectional view.
Oorrespomiing parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to spring bed-bottoms; and it consists of two frames having interposed springs, and the upper one being provided with spring-coils, as will loe hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
1n the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the lower, and B the upper, frame of my improved bed-bottom. The frame A is composed ofthree longitudinal slats, @supporting eight (more or less) transverse slats, D, upon which are placed cylindrical coiled springs E, supporting the transverse slats F of the upper bed-frame, B, which latter consists of the said transverse slats F, connected by side rails or longitudinal slats, G. The springs E have hooked ends H, by which they are adjusted upon the transverse slats'of the upper and lower frames, which are thus connected.
I are the coiled springs, arranged upon the v slats F of the upper frame, said springs consisting of conical coils formed in pairs and connected by U-shaped loops. The lower ends of the coils have hooks J, by which they are adjusted upon the slats, as shown, the two coils constituting each spring being placed upon adjoining slats. The upper ends of the coils are then connected by suitable cross-hooked rods or braces, K, which prevent the said springs from being tilted or displaced. Itwill also be observed that the springs E interposed between the frames have a l'ull bearing upon the slats of each framewhich prevents any possibility of displacement.
My improved bed-bottom is simple in construction, durable, and inexpensive. Having two sets of springs, it possesses great elasticity, and is consequently more comfortable than the majority of spring bed-bottoms now in use.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A bed-bottom constructed of two parallel horizontal frames havin gtransverse slats connected by intermediate cylindrical coils, in combination with the springs I, secured on top of the upper frame, as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
ROBERT W. LOWNES.
