The hinge jaw I2 is then swung to a closed position and secured by the latch 22. The nipple 21 can then be turned by the, wrench 8 without danger of damaging the threads thereof located in the socket 26 due to the fact that the turning movement of the wrench 8 in a direction for applying the nipple 21 will merely cause the end of the nipple, engaged by the socket 26, to abut more firmly against the closed end of the socket. After the nipple has been applied, the latch 22' is disengaged and the jaw l2 swung to an open position for detaching the wrench 8 therefrom.
The wrench head [a, located at the opposite end of the handle 9 is identical in construction to the wrench head 10 and differs therefrom only in that it is of a different size or at least isprovided with a different size nipple receiving socket.
Obviously, the wrench 8 may be utilized for applying stud bolts or for applying long pipe, both ends of which are externally threaded, where it is desired to avoid marring the surface of the pipe with a conventional pipe wrench.
Various modifications and changes in the construction of the invention as heretofore disclosed are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.
I, claim as my invention:
1. In a wrench for applying externally threaded nipples or the like, a substantially fiat relatively thin wrench head comprising a. fixed jaw and a movable jaw pivotally connected to the fixed jaw, an elongated handle formed integral with and extending from the fixed jaw, said fixed jaw being disposed transversely of the longitudinal axis of the handle, said head the fixed jaw, said head being provided with an internally threaded socket opening outwardly of one side only thereof and having substantially equalportionsiformed by each of the two jaws,.said socket being adapted to engage one of the'externally threaded ends of a nipple for rotating the nipple when the wrench is turned, said jaws having laterally offset barrel portions at corresponding endsof their jaw.faces,':each of said jaws being recessed at said ends for receiving the barrel portion of the other jawga. hinge pin extending through said barrel-por tions and combining therewith to form the pivot of the jaws, and Iatchmeans carried by the free end of the movable jaw for engagement with a portion of thefixed jaw for latching the jaws in closedposition.
