This invention generally relates to index tabs 'for pages Of books," files, and thelikefand more particularly to a means for quickly and efficiently applying the tab to the marginal edges of a sheet.

Index tabs in the form of a piece of strip material folded o-ver upon itself to provide a double ply and having an adhesive coat along its inside lower free edges have been used extensively in the past. In use, considerable difficulty has been experienced in accurately locating the index tab on the sheet to which it is applied. The user, unless he is very careful, will find that the tab is askew with respect to the edge of the sheet, or that it is located too far out or too far in with respect to the edge of the sheet.

I have devised a means which can be incorporated into an index tab of the above described class that will accurately locate the tab with respect to the edge of the sheet that it is being applied to in a very simple and efficient manner.

It is, then, an object of my invention to provide a means in an index tab for accurately locating it with respect to the edge of a sheet that is easy to use and inexpensive to manufacture.

My tab employs a tacky adhesive for securing the inner surface of the side walls of the folded strip to the paper sheet. The tacky adhesive is covered by a covering material that is removed as the tab is applied. According to the invention, a locating bead is formed in one of the pieces of covering material employed. This bead is designed for cooperation with the edge of a pieceof paper on which the tab is to be mounted for the purpose of locating the tab with respect to the said edge. The invention will be clearly understood after reference to the following detailed specification read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of an indexing tab showing clearly a locating strip according to the invention.

Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figure 1, A indicates a portion of an index tab.

It comprises a strip of material In bent upon itself along a line II to form side walls I2 and I3 and an intervening channel I4. The strip I may be of any suitable material but preferably is transparent so that a strip of writing paper can be slipped into the channel I4 when the strip is applied to a sheet of paper that can be seenthrough the walls I2 and I3.

The inner surface of the side walls I2 and i3 adjacent to their outer edges I5 is provided with a band of tacky adhesive I5a. This in the normal course is covered by a covering material of any suitable nature indicated by the numerals I6 and Il respectively. The covering material is folded upon itself to one side of its mid line as at I8 to form an outwardly projecting skirt I9 that extends beyond the outer edges I5 of the walls I2 and I3.

In use, the edge of a sheet of paper I90, upon which the indexing tab is to be mounted is slipped between the inner faces of the covering material I6 and I1 and isbrought to lie substantially flush with the upper folded edges of the covering material. One skirt I9 is then pulled from the side wall while the other one is held rigidly in accurate position relative to the mounting,

sheet I9a. After one skirt has been removed, the wall from which it was removed is pressed against the mounting sheet I9a. The skirt on the remaining wall is then removed and the free tacky surface of the Wall is also pressed against the mounting sheet I9a.

In the index tab shown in Figure 2 I provide a projecting bead 26 on skirt I'I disposed to lie slightly above the upper folded edge of the skirt so that as the sheet of paper upon which the index tab is to be mounted is projected between the inner faces of the strips of covering material, the edge thereof will engage with the projecting bead 29 to locate it in proper relation to the tab. With the bead 2B for the purpose of locating the tab with respect to the edge of the paper sheet upon which it is mounted the tab can be mounted very accurately and quickly and it is to this feature that my patent is directed.

From the foregoing it will be appreciated that I have improved the index tab by providing means thereon for accurately and quickly locating it in position. Embodiments of the locating bead other than the one shown in the drawings will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and I do not intend that my patent should be restricted to the one shown.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. An indexing tab comprising a strip of material bent upon itself along a line to form two side walls and an intervening channel, a tacky adhesive substance applied to said strip on the inner surface of each of said side walls adjacent their outer edges, covering material adapted to cover each of said tacky adhesive surfaces, said covering material on each of said surfaces being folded upon itself along a line substantially parallel to the line of bending of said strip to forma skirt which projects beyond the outer edges of the side walls of said strip, the folded edge of said covering material being formed with a projecting bead that lies above the line of folding of said covering, said bead being adapted to cooperate with the edge of a mounting sheet to which the tab is applied to facilitate the aligning of said tab thereon.

An indexing tab comprising a strip of material bent upon itself along a line to form two side walls and an intervening channel, a tacky adhesive substance applied to said strip on the inner surface of each of said side walls adjacent their outer edges, covering material adapted to cover each of said tacky adhesive surfaces, said covering material being folded along a line substantially parallel to the line of bending of said I strip to form a skirt which projects beyond the outer edges of the side walls of said strip, said covering material being formed with a projecting bead inwardly of the ends of said folded strip 15 to cooperate with the edge of a mounting sheet to which the tab is applied to facilitate the aligning of said tab thereon.
