Patented July 12, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,475,698 MEMORANDUM PAD Thomas Croker, Chicago, 111. Application August 28, 1945, Serial No. 613,085
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a novel memorandum pad.
An object of this invention is to provide a memorandum pad for positioning on a page of a book like a bookmark in which the face covering the front face of the book page is provided with a visible portion of a transparent sheet cooper-atively arranged with respect to an underlying translucent sheet to visibly reproduce matter written upon the transparent sheet.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a memorandum pad having a face for covering the front face of a book page provided with a visible portion of a transparent sheet coperatively arranged with respect to an underlying translucent sheet to visibly reproduce matter written upon the transparent sheet, with an elongated eraser slidable along such memorandum pad face for detaching the translucent sheet from cooperative relation with the visible portion of the transparent sheet to thereby erase the written matter.
Other objects of this invention will appear from the following specification and claims and from the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the book marker with some of the layers of material cut away to show the construction;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line til-53 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, I represents a page of a book and Figure 1 sho 's the book marker '32 thereupon. The book marker has a base sheet 3 made of cardboard and having its top surface covered with a coating of paraffin or wax and presenting a dark background. Layer 4 on top of base 3 consists of a thin white translucent tissue sheet made of cellophane or other suitable material. On top of white tissue 4 is a sheet 5 consisting of a thin transparent film also made of cellophane or the like. The sheets 3, 4 and 5 are covered, front and back, with a singlecolored leather strip 6 which is folded at the top. That part of the leather strip forming the front of the book marker is cut out at the center leaving only a rim portion forming a frame for the layers beneath. The bottom of the front portion of the leather strip is longer than the back portion and may be slit for decorative purposes, as at l. The front leather cover, the transparent sheet 5 and white sheet 4 are stitched together all the way around the frame forming portion,
as shown at 8. In addition, the paraffin-coated base member 3 is stitched to the front leather strip, the transparent sheet 5 and the white sheet 4 at the top and bottom only of the book marker.
The base sheet 3 carries a slidable member 9 having a pair of longitudinal slits it therein and having a pointer l I at one end. This pointer may be made of heavy cellophane or stout paper and is slidably mounted on base sheet 3 by means of the slits Ill so that the center portion l 2 formed by the slits is on top of the base sheet 3 and the outer portions I3 are under the base sheet 3. The stitches at the top and bottom of the book marker limit the movement of arrow member 9. Since the side stitches do not pass through the base member 3, they will not interfere with sliding movement of arrow member 9 from top to bottom and vice versa.
At the top of the book marker a stylus M made of wood or other suitable material is held by friction in a pocket formed in the leather fold above the top row of stitches.
In operation, the book marker is placed on the page, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 with the back leather cover behind the page and with the remainder of the book marker on top of the page. The arrow member 9 may be slid up or down to indicate the line where reading is to be resumed the next time. When the book is closed, the portion 1 will protrude below and will facilitate finding the correct page when reading is to be resumed.
When it is desired to make notes during the course of reading, it is merely necessary to take the stylus M or some other pointed object and write on the cellophane transparent sheet 5. The sheet 5 will yield under the stylus and cause the white sheet 4 to stick to the parafiin-cOated sheet 3 at the lines of pressing and will thus present dark lines. These marks will show through the transparent sheet 5 and will appear as writing thereon. These marks will disappear when white sheet 4 is separated from the parafiincoated sheet 3. Since center strip l2 of the arrow member 9 is located between white sheet l and sheet 3, the arrow member 9 may be moved up or down to separate these two sheets and cause the disappearance of any notes on the book marker.
Thus, the arrow member 9 serves a twofold function, namely, it serves to identify a particular line on the page of the book and it also serves to eiface reference notes made on the book marker.
While a certain specific embodiment of this invention has been shown, it will be understood that various modifications may be made within the spirit of the invention. Therefore, no limitations on the invention are intended other than are imposed by the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A writing pad comprising a backing sheet, a base sheet secured at its upper end to the upper end of said backingsheet andotherwisaunconnected with said? backing sheet, ,saidibase.sheet having a waxy upper surface, a white translucent sheet overlying said base sheet, a transparent. sheet overlying said white translucent sheet, said base sheet, said translucent sheet, and saidtransparent sheet being cooperatively arranged to visibly reproduce matter written upon saidtransparent sheet, a cover sheet overlying; said-retransparent sheet, said cover sheet being cut away to,
provide .an opening extending between' the opposite side edges and the opposite ends of said cover sheet anddefini-ng a'fra-me exposing-- aportion of saidtransparent sheet corresponding to said opening, for writing-thereon; first fastening means extending across and fastening together the upper ends of saidbase, white transparent, translucent, and-cover sheets; second fastening means extending across and fasteningtogether the lower ends ofsaid base,- white transparent,
and translucent sheets, and a transversely elongated eraser mounted on said pad and posi tioned between said base and white translucent sheet and slidable along said base sheet between the limits provided by said first and second fastening means for separating said white translucent sheet from said base sheet so as to erase matter written upon said pad.
