SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,084, dated December 20, 1881.
Application filed April 30, 1881. (No model.)

Be it known that 1, JAMES YoULL, a citizen of the United States,residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Ida and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trucks for Barrels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in trucks for barrels, and has reference to certain mechanisms designed to be adjusted and affixed to barrels for the purpose of increasing the facility of handling the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the lower or under side of the hoop which holds the casters or wheels of the truck. Fig. 2 is an oblique detached view of the two ends of the hoop or band A, Fig. 1, which forms the frame, showing the slots in such ends. Fig. 3 is a View of one of the casters and a portion of the hoop A, showing the manner of attaching the casters to such hoop.
A, Fig. 1,is a hoop formed by bending a band of iron or other suitable material, with a slot, E, Fig. 2, in each end.
D is a bolt set rigidly upon the outer end of the hoop A, and extending through and sliding loosely in the slot of the other end of such hoop, and held at any point in such slot by means of thumb-nut B, placed on the bolt D, as shown in Fig. 1, which serves to fasten the ends of the hoop or frame rigidly.
The pin or post 0 is set into the inner end of the hoop A and passes through the slot E of the outer end of the hoop, and serves as a guide in sliding the ends of the hoop, and also assists the bolt D in holding the ends on the same plane when the hoop is adjusted.
On the inner side of the hoop or band A are set the vertical sockets a a a, as shown. The ordinary caster-wheels, b, of suitable size and strength, Fig. 3, are set vertically into these sockets. The purpose of placing the sockets a a a on the inside of the hoop A is to allow the outside of such hoop to be a plain, un-
broken, and uninterrupted surface, so as to press uniformly entirely around the inside of the barrel-chine.
The manner of using the device is as follows: The barrel to be set on the truck is laid on its side. The hoop is then placed against the bottom of the barrel, inside of the chine, and the hoop A then expanded until it tits and presses closely against the inner side of thc chine of the stuves. The thumb-nut Bis then set, thus fastening the truck firmly to the barrel by the outward pressure of the hoop A againstthe inner side of the chine.
This truck is intended more especially for use on barrels in stores which contain groceries, &c., and from which sales are repeatedly made.
A barrel placed on this truck m iy be moved with ease and set under a shelf, counter, or wherever it may be desired to place it. It is designed to leave the device attached to the barrel until thclatter is emptied of its contents.
It will be noticed that the slots and thumbnutare ofgreat advantage, as by means of them the diameter of the hoop A may be increased or diminished to fit barrels of different sizes.
What I claim as my invent.ion,and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. In a barrel truck, the hoop A,having open slotted ends, to one of which ends is rigidly affixed the guide-post O, and to the other the threaded bolt D, having the nut B, by means of which such ends are held on the same plane and the-outer surface of the hoop A pressed adj ustablyintothe chine ot'the barrel, substantially as shown, and for the purposes specified.
2. The hoop A,having open ends which pass each other, and which are provided respectively with the slots E E, one of such ends having the boltD and the other the post 0, as shown,in combination with thesockets a a a and wheels I) b b, substantially as and for the purposes described.
