UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER TRAIBUE, 0F GIRARD, ILLINOIS.
VEHICLE-TELL.
1,129,529. Specification of Letters Patent Patented Feb. 23, 1915.
Application filed September 17, 1914. Serial No. 862,222.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER TRABUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Girard, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Thills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in braces for vehicle thills and the object in view is to produce a device of this nature so constructed as to reinforce and form a rigid thill adjacent to its point of connection with the vehicle.
My invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of one thill. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the shaft of a thill and B is a curved metallic brace, angled in cross section as shown and terminating in eyes C through which connecting bolts are passed for attachment to clips upon the forward axle of a vehicle in the usual manner. Said brace is provided with elongated slots Bwith abridgepiece B to reinforce the brace and the inner marginal edge D of the curved portion of the brace is preferably inclined or tapering. A lateral projection F of the brace is adapted to extend underneath the crosspiece H to which it is fastened by means of bolts I. An iron K is fastened to the top of the crosspiece and is held by the bolts I thereto, while bolts L pass through the shaft and the angled brace B.
By the provision of a brace embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that the shaft of the thill terminates adjacent to one end of the curved portion of the brace, thus dispensing with the usual curved portion of the wooden shaft commonly employed, the metallic portion, by the construction shown, having the necessary strength to withstand the strain that comes upon the thill and thus lessening the eX- pense incident to the construction of the thill by reason of the wooden portion terminating as shown and described without the necessity of its being bent and ironed in the usual manner.
What I claim to be new is:
A curved shaft brace terminating at one end in a laterally extending boss which is apertured, said brace having a tapering laterally extending flange upon one edge, the edge of the flange adjacent to one end being parallel to the brace and having a lateral extension designed to be fastened to a crosspiece.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUTHER TRABUE. Witnesses:
E. A. GIBSON, VIRGINIA MCGHEE.
