Description

W. P. WHITE.
HOLD-BACKS.
No.177,184. Pate nted May 9,18%;
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLARD 1?. WHITE, OF QRLAND, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOLDBACK S.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,184, dated May 9, 1876; application filed April 1, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD P. WHITE, of Orland, in the county of Hancock and State ot' Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, devices for attaching the parts to each other.
Same letters show like parts. j
The object of my invention is to provide a holdback for vehicle-shafts, which, while furnishing a secure support for the holdbackstrap when the vehicle presses forward, shall not retain said strap so as to prevent the passage of the horse from the shafts in case of accident. In such event, my device, as will be readily seen, is a great safeguard, besides being a convenience in unharnessing, rendering it unnecessary to detach the holdbackstraps, that being done by the horse in passing from the vehicle.
My invention consists of a holdback, made in the ordinary form up to thejunction of the hook with the supporting-standard. .The latteris made of metal, but the retaining-hook is made of rubber or like elastic material. It is sufficiently stiti' to prevent the escape of the strap from the motion of the vehicle, but bends and allows it to be withdrawn when force is exerted against it. It further consists in the peculiar manner of attachment of the rubber to the metal portion of the holdback, said rubber portion having a socket therein,
and being stretched over'a projection, and retained by a shoulder and groove on the iron.
Reference to the drawing will explain my invention fully.
At a is a portion of a vehicle-shaft, having the holdback b thereon, the standard 0 and brace d of which may be constructed as usual.
The retaining-hook 0, attached to said standard, is, as before stated, of rubber. The dotted lines exhibit its position when drawn out by the strap.
In Fig. 2 is shown my mannerof attaching the hook to the standard, which, as at f, is
herein described, consisting of a metal standard. in combination with a rubber retaininghook, attached to the upper extremity of said standard, and curving inwardly toward the shaft, as shown, for the purposes set forth.
2. In a holdback, the metal portion 0, provided with the projection g and groove h, in in combination with the rubber retaining-hook e, having the socket 13 therein, said parts operating as set forth, for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of March, 1876.
