IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING WHIFFLETREES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 183,746, dated October 31, 1876; application iled August 22, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES B. BEEwsTEE, of New York city, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spring-Bow Whiflietree, of which the following is aspecification Figures 1 and 2 are plan views of my invention, showing it applied to one and two horse vehicles, respectively.

This invention relates to an improvement in whiftletrees and evener-bars; and consists in making the same in form of an archers bow, spanned with a metal` strap or rod, all arranged to render the whiflletree or evener-bar elastic, and thereby facilitate the starting of Wagons, carriages, sleighs, horse-cars, or other vehicles to which the same may be applied.

A in the drawing represents my improved whifletree, shown in Fig. l to be applied to a one-horse vehicle. It consists of a wooden bow, a, which is spanned by a straight metal rod or strap, b, and isy thereby rendered a spring-bow. The middle 0f the metallic rod or strap b connects with the whifletree-bar B .of the vehicle by a bolt, d, or other suitable fastening, said bolt or fastening passing through an eye or loop, e, which is formed on the rod or strap b, or connecting therewith in other manner. In use the whiflietree is so applied that the rod or strap b is in front, as shown, the eiiect of the draft on the whiflietree being to spring the bow a, and thus utilize its elasticity. Instead ot' securing the whifiietree at the middle of the metal rod b by suitable fastenings, it may be secured at the middle of the bow.

The invention is equally applicable to one and to two horse vehicles. But in the latter case I prefer to apply it to the evener-bar AX, as shown in Fig. 2-that is to say, to make the evener-bar of the bow a and rod b in manner described, and apply to it two Whiftletrees, C U, of ordinary or suitable construction.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The spring-bow whifdetree or evener-bar, made of the bow a, and metal spanning-rod b, substantially as herein shown and described.
