PATENT @rrrcn.
POLE AND SHAFT FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,928, dated April 25, 1882,
Application filed February 11, 1882. (Modem To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DIOGENES B. TERRELL, of Wytheville, in the county of VVythe and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Attaching Poles and Shafts to Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, whichform a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, showing the pole in position and shafts dctached. Fig. 2 is a section on the line mm, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the liuey 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view, showing the shafts in position. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 22, Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a bottom plan.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like, letters of reference.
This invention relates to devices for attaching poles and shafts interchangeably to vehicles; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent a pair of short arms or stub ends of thills, which are secured tothe vehicle-axle by thill-couplings of the ordinary construction. The arms A A are connected near their front ends by a cross bar or brace, B, which, with ment to the vehicle.
0 is the vehicle-pole, which is provided near end the pole has a rearward-projecting strap,
B, where it is secured by a bolt, Gr, passing through the said strap and brace and through a clip, H, which also serves to secure in position a single-tree placed on top of said brace, and which may also be regarded as one of the permanent fixtures of the device.
I I are two sockets fitted upon the ends of the arms A, and provided with clips or brackets J, overlapping the ends of the cross-bar D and the single-trees K, which are placed upon the ends of said cross-bar and held in place A to which these parts are thus secured.
by bolts L, passing through the clips J, sockets I, single-trees K, and the ends of the arms In this manner the pole and its attachments are connected to the vehicle; but to further strengthen the connection I also avail myself I of brackets or braces M, secured to the under side of the braceB and connected to the bolts L, the strain upon which is thus partly taken up by said braces.
When it is desired to substitute thills or shafts for the pole O the latter is removed by removing the bolts which connect it and the cross-barl), sockets I, and singletrces K to the arms A and brace B. The shafts S S are now connected to the ends ofthe arms A by means of sleeves O and bolts P Q, the latter ofwhich also pass through the braces M, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The pole and shafts may be readilyinterchanged, and the shafts may be conveniently strapped to the vehicle, so as to be always available when required.
I am aware of the patent to Dykes, No. 214,897, dated April 29, 1879, and I claim nothing therein shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the arms A, crossbrace' B, havingrecess F, pole G, having cross-bar D and strap E, sockets I, having brackets J, single-trees K, and suitable connecting-bolts, substantially as seti'orth.
2. The combination of the arms A, cross bar or brace B, pole (J, havingcross-bar D, sockets I, having brackets or clips J and suitable connecting-bolts, and braces M, connecting said bolts with the cross-bar B, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- DIOGENES B. TERREL-L.
