Description

M. CAMPBELL. Adjustable Strainer for Milk-Pails.
No. 200,976. Patented March 5, 1878.
a /f yda UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARVIN CAMPBELL, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE STRAINERS FOR MILK-PAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,976, dated March 5, 1878; application filed December 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN CAMPBELL, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Strainers, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists of an adjustable stralner, so constructed as to be capable of being removed, and adjustable to any sized pail, either wooden or tin.
In the annexed drawings, making a part of thls specification, Figure 1 is aplan view, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
The same letters are employed in both figures 1n the indication of identical parts.
A is a shield, made with a flange, A, so as to fit over the rim of the pail, and is provided with a lip and gauze strainer, such as are found on any ordinary pail strainer.
The inner side of the flange A is faced with rubber or any suitable packing, placed in a flanged way, so that it may be removed to prevent leaking while the fluid is being poured, and also slipping.
The strainer is held in position bybands B B, fastened to the flange A, passing around the pail, and secured together by means of a lever, F.
To one band is attached a lug, O, which serves as a fulcrum for the lever. To the to prevent the band from other is attached a shank, passing between the fulcrum and the handle, having a series of holes, through one of which a pin, E, is
passed, fastening it to the lever, and thus enabling the band to be adapted to a pail of any diameter.
The lug is of such a height that as soon as the lever has been forced below the line of draft of the shank, the strain being below the fulcrum, it tends to draw the lever nearer the pail and thus holds it, and it cannot become loose unless power be applied to raise the lever.
By removing the wire-gauze of the strainer and substituting in its place a perforated piece of tin or sheet metal, the device may be used as a sprinkler.
The bands, as shown, may also be used, when detached from the shield, for holding a cloth strainer, which covers the whole surface of the pail.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the bands B B, lug C, shank D, provided with a series of holes, pin E, and locking-lever F, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARVIN CAMPBELL.
