PHILIP LOUIS SERWE, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
PRESS.
Application filed August 22, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP LOUIS Snnwn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have invented a new and Improved Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to hand presses for pressing lard and other materials, and its object is to provide a new and improved press which is very simple, durable and eX- ceedingly strong in construction to readily withstand the pressure to which the press is subjected during use.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of an inverted U-shaped frame of channel iron provided with feet of angle iron fastened to the lower ends or terminals of the sides of the said frame, a support for the container of the material to be pressed and formed of channel iron fastened to the sides of the frame, a nut bolted to the curved upper end of the frame for engagement by a screw rod provided with a handle for turning the screw and actuating the presser plate of the press.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the press; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the support and portion of one side of the frame, the section being on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The frame A of the press is formed of a single piece of channel iron bent into inverted U shape, as plainly indicated in Fig. l, to provide sides or supports A integrally connected with each other at the upper end by the curved connecting portion A The lower ends or terminals of the sides A of the frame A are provided with feet 13 made of angle iron and having their upright members fastened to the inner faces of the sides A. by the use of rivets C or other fastening means, the bottom edges of the sides resting on the horizontal members of the said angle iron feet. The sides A are also connected with each other a distance above the feet B by a support D adapted to support a container F in which operates the presser plate in the usual manner for pressing the material under treatment at the time. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 716,428.
support D is formed of two telescoped channel irons D, D extending between the sides A, the top channel iron D having terminal side flanges D and top flanges D of which the terminal side flanges D engage the front and rear faces of the sides A and are riveted thereto by rivets E, while the flanges D extend upwardly and fit against the inner faces of the sides A and are fastened thereto by rivets E. The bottom channel iron D is placed upside down (see Fig. 3) and is provided at the ends of its bottom or middle member with downwardly-extending flanges D fitting against the inner faces of the sides A and fastened thereto by rivets E By the arrangement described an exceedingly strong and durable support D is provided, capable of withstanding the heavy strains to which the support is subjected at the time the press is in use.
A nut G is fitted onto the under side of the top connecting portion A and is fastened thereto by rivets or other fastening means Gr, and in the said nut G screws a screw rod H provided at its upper end with a hand wheel I for turning the screw rod H with a view to actuate the presser plate in the container F. The construction of the container F and the presser plate is the same as in presses of this kind, and hence further description of the same is not deemed necessary.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described, an exceedingly strong and durable frame is provided, capable of readily withstanding the pressure to which such presses are subjected during use.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a lard press, an inverted U-shaped frame of channel iron, feet of angle iron fastened to the ends of the sides of the said frame, and a support connecting the sides of the frame with each other at a point between the lower ends of the frame and the upper curved portion of the frame, the said support being formed of two telescoping channel irons extending between the sides of the frame and having terminal flanges fastened to the outer faces and the inside faces of the sides of the frame.
2. In a press of the character described, a frame formed of an inverted Ushaped member of channel iron and provided with feet at the lower ends thereof, and with a support secured to and between the side portions of the said member, said support consisting of telescoping channel irons, the upper one being provided at its ends with side flanges engaging the side members of the frame and upwardly projecting flanges en gaging the inner faces of the members, and the lower one provided with downwardly projecting flanges engaging the inner faces: of the said members.
3. In a press of thecharacter described, a' frame comprising an inverted U-shaped member of channel iron, feet of angle iron. secured to the lower ends of the said mem-f ber, a nut secured to the under side of the.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Washington, D. G.'
curved connecting portion of the U-shaped member, and a support secured to and between the sides of' the said member said support consisting of two telescoping channel irons, the upper one being provided at its ends with side flanges and an upwardly projecting flange and the lower 'onewith downwardly projecting flanges.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
'PHILIP LOUIS SERlVE.
