MEAT-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1910.
Application filed May 14, 1909. Serial No. 496,035.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL M. JOHNSON, citizen of the United States, residing at WVaupaca, in the county of Waupaca and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in hand presses such as are employed for pressing meat, cheese, fruit and the like and the object of the invention, is the provision of a simple and inexpensive press of this character which will operate in an effective manner to expel the moisture or juice from the material being pressed and which embodies a novel construction whereby it can be utilized either for pressing large or small quantities of material as desired.
With these objects in view, the press is formed with a main press box and a removable frame which can be applied to the press box to reduce the effective size thereof, the follower or plunger being a novel construction which admits of it being made either large or small so as to fit within either the main press box or the removable frame.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand press embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the same showing a frame as fitted within the interior of the press box for reducing the effective size thereof; and, Fig. 3 is a detail view of one corner of the press box and a portion of the frame fitted therein.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated on the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the base which supports the press mechanism and has the upwardly extending yoke 2 secured thereto. Resting loosely upon the base 1 is a pan 3 which receives the main press box 4, the pan being designed to retain the moisture or juice expelled from the material being pressed until it can be discharged through a spout 5 in one side of the pan. This press box 4 is used when it is desired to press a large quantity of material, and when a smaller quantity of material is to be operated upon and a smaller press box is desired, a removable frame 6 is fitted within the press box so as to reduce the effective size thereof.
A sleeve 7 is carried by the top of the yoke 2 at the central portion thereof and threaded within this sleeve is a press stem 8, the upper end of the press stem being provided with a handle 9, while the lower end has a spider or follower frame 10 swiveled thereon. As shown in the drawing, this follower frame is formed with four radial arms which are deflected downwardly, each pair of the arms carrying a follower plate 11. These plates 11 which are of an elongated formation, are adj ustably connected to the follower frame so as to be moved toward or away from each other, and when moved inwardly to the limit of their movement toward each other, are so spaced as to fit within the removable frame (S. In connecting the follower plates to the frame 10, it will be observed that each of the said plates is formed with a pair of transversely disposed slots 12 loosely receiving clamping bolts 13 which also extend through the arms of the follower frame. WVhen these bolts are tightened the follower plates are clamped securely in position, while upon loosening the bolts the plates can be moved either toward or away from each other as desired. lVhen the removable frame 6 is not utilized in connection with the press box 1., a frame or follower member 1 1 is applied to the plates 11, the said frame being of such a size as to fit accurately within the press box. This frame or follower member lt is provided upon opposite sides with the upwardly extending headed studs 15 designed to be engaged by the notches 16 in the outer edges of the follower plates 11. hen the follower plates are moved inwardly toward each other so as to fit within the removable frame 6 of the press box, the notches 16 are withdrawn from the headed studs 15 and the frame or follower member 1 1 can be removed from the plates. However, when the follower member is placed in position and the plates 11 are moved apart, the headed studs 15 are engaged by the notches 16 and the follower member is securely connected to the plates.
The press stem 8 extends downwardly through the follower frame 10 far enough for its lower extremity to engage the followers or covers that are secured to the follower plates 11 so as to bear downwardly upon the same. i
In the operation of the device, the meat or other material to be pressed is placed within the press box and the handle 9 turned to move the follower and press the meat between the same and the base. The moisture or juice expelled from the meat when thus subjected to pressure, is collected Within the pan 3 and retained therein until discharged through the spout 5. As previously mentioned should it be desired to use the press in connection with a smaller quantity of material, the effective size of the box can be reduced by fitting the removable frame 6 within the interior thereof and detaching the frame 14 from the plates 11, the said plates being moved inwardly toward each other to the limit of their movement.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. The combination of a press box, means for reducing the effective size of the press box, a follower comprising plates movable toward and away from each other, and a follower member adapted to be detachably applied to the follower.
2. The combination of a press box, means for reducing the effective size of the press box, a follower comprising plates movable toward and away from each other, the said plates being formed with notches, and a follower member provided with headed studs adapted to be detachably engaged by the notches.
3. The combination of a base, a press box supported upon the base, a removable frame adapted to be fitted within the interior of the press box to reduce the effective size thereof, a sleeve carried by the base, a press stem threaded within the sleeve, a follower carried by the press stem and comprising plates movable toward and away from each other, the said plates being adapted to operate within the removableframe of the press box,.and a follower member adapted to be detachably applied to the follower for operation Within the press box.
4. The combination of a base, a press box supported upon the base, a press stem carried by the base, a follower frame carried by the press stem, a follower comprising plates having a pin and slot connection with the follower frame and movable toward and away from each other, the said plates being provided with notches, and a follower member provided with studs adapted to be detachably engaged by the notches.
5. The combination of the base, a yoke secured to the base, a pan resting upon the base, a press box received within the pan, a press stem mounted upon the yoke, means for reducing the effective size of the press box, and a plunger carried by the press stem and adapted to be made larger or smaller as desired.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
