JAMES M. NEWTON, OF DAYTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO DANIEL D. MARTIN AND JOHN ENGLISH.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-PRESSES FOR JELLY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,809, dated August 12, 1873; application filed June 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. NEWTON, of Dayton, Campbell county, State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new and useful Hand- Press for Jelly, 8m, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a straining utensil, to contain the material to extract juice from, which is fitted interiorly with a pressurehead and hand-screw, by which fruit from which jelly is to be made can be conveniently pressed and the juice extracted therefrom.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my press, partly cut away or sectionized to expose the interior. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the A is a cylindrical vessel finely perforated to serve as a straining medium. To the bottom B of this vessel a central screw, 0, is securely attached, to which the hollow screwthreaded handle E e is fitted. Between the handle E e and the bottom B the follower or presser head D is interposed, the periphery of it being made to closely fit the cylinder. The
parts, the part E having the grain of the wood running lengthwise, and the part 6 the grain of the wood running crosswise. The part 6 is firmly secured, by glueing or otherwise, within the part E, and the crossing of the grain renders the entire handle so strong as to avoid the risk of splitting. The part 6 alone is provided with the female screw necessary to fit screw 0.
The materialto be pressed is placed in the vessel after the handle and follower have been removed, and upon the replacing of these parts and a turning of the handle E with one hand while the other hand holds the vessel over the receptacle for the juice, the material can be conveniently and effectually robbed of its juices.
I claim 1. The combination of perforated cylinder A, central screw 0, follower D, and handle E, operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The handle E, when composed of two parts, E 0, with the grain of the Wood at right angles to each other, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
Witnesses: JAMES M. NEWTON.
