Description

M. H U SSEY.
Guttau-Presses.
Patented Feb.10.1874-,
WWW/W UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
MATTHEW HUSSEY, OF TROY, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CTTON'PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147.326,(lated February 10,1874; application led May 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
De it known that I, MATTHEW HUSSEY, of Troy, in the county of Pike and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved CottonTress, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical transverse section of my im` proved press on the line c o, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same onV the line x w, Fig. l.
Similar letters of. reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish, for the use of cotton-planters and others, a powerful press, by which cotton and other material can be rapidly and closely packed. The construction of the press, being` a simple one, allows the same to be built for less cost than other more complicated presses. My invention consists of the plunger-block operated by pivoted levers v in connection with suitable pulleys or windlasses.
In the drawing, A represents the bottom frame of the press, of strong timber, which supports the box-frame D and packing-box C, constructed in the usual substantial manner. Two or more cross-beams, D, rest on frame A, and pass vertically to the longitudinal airis of the packing-box G under the frame of the same. These beams D are of the heaviest timber, and rigidly connected by bolts and iron bands. Into slotted recesses a near their outer ends lare inserted and pivoted to beams plunger-block H. To the upper ends of pieces F are pivoted the upper levers I by means ot' metallic guide-bands d, applied to their lower sides. These bands d rest on and movefreely over the rounded end beams D, giving the pivots o of the rectangles F play to adjust themselves freely to the different positions of levers I. Strong bandsprings f, applied to levers I, under guide-bands d, may be raised by bolts g when the block H is nearly down in its box C, which springs, by acting on piving the ends of levers I. The beam-levers E transmit the motion to the plunger rods and block, and press the cotton or other material closely into the packing-box. The plungerblock is raised above the packing-box by pressing in an upward direction, the plunger-rods yielding and supporting the block above the box till the same is lled with the material to be pressed. The block is then brought down into the box, and the levers applied in the manner described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The beams E, pivoted to beams D, the angle-levers F, levers I, and the rods G, pivoted at the vertex of angles, combined with follower II, in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. The levers F I, combined with the bands d, springs f, and bolts g, as and for the purpose set forth.
Vitnesses: MATTHEW HUSSEY.
