WVILLIAM A. WRIGHT, OF GRIFFIN, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY AND COTTCN PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,736, dated February 9, 1875; application filed December 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, of Griffin, in the county of Spanlding and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton and Hay Presses; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompan yin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a screwpress which can be used for packing either up or down, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my press, showing the same in position for pressing downward. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same through the line 00 ac, Fig. 1, showing it in position for pressing upward. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the sectional follower.
A represents the frame, in which the balebox B is placed and secured in any suitable and convenient manner. The sides of the balebox B are each made in two sections hinged together so that either section may be opened independent of the other, thereby facilitating the filling of the box as well as the taking out of the bale when pressed. The frame A should be made strong and substantial to withstand all the strain and pressure to which it will be subjected. Across the top of theframe is a beam, 0, through which is passed the flanged nut a, said nut being on its upper end provided with the flanged driver b, to which the lever D is secured for revolving the nut.
Through the nut a is passed the screw E, for operating the follower of the press. The follower is made in two parts, Gr and H, the part G consisting of a solid block swiveled to the end of the screw E, and the part H provided with side flanges e e, to fit over the block G. The bottom of the part H is provided with transverse grooves for the ropes or bands of the bale to fit in while being pressed, as is usual in such presses.
The press-frame A is hung upon trunnions h it in the upper ends of inclined beams I I, which are suitably secured to a base, J.
By thus hanging the press upon trunnions, or their equivalents, it may be reversed so as to pack either up or down, which adapts it to universal use in gin-houses, and also adapts it to hand or horse power and water or steam power without change of construction.
The sectional follower facilitates the clearing of the packingbox to admit the cotton when the screw packs down.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reversible screw-press hung upon trunnions and capable of pressing either up or down, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the swinging frame A, bale-box B having its sides made in two sections hinged together, screw E, sectional follower G H, trunnions h h, braces I I, and bed J, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of July, 1874.
