' Beit known that I, JOHN.- B. ROMANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Phillips and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ealing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in baling-presses; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully setJ'orth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

A represents the ground frame comprising the sills B, the ends of which are connected by the cross-beams O. From the upper side of the ground sills, near the centers thereof, project four vertical posts, D, forming a rectangular vertical guiding-frame. rlhe upper ends ofthe posts D are connected together by the bars E and the transverse bars F. rIhe inner corners of the posts D are provided with rectangular vertical grooves G.
H represents vertical standards, which project from the upper side ofthe sills B, and are connected together in pairs at each end of the vertical guiding-frame by cross-beams I, on which are secured bearing-blocks K, the said bearing-blocks being located in a line with the longitudinal center of the frame A.
L represents a vertical "rectangular pressbox, which is provided at its upper end with the folding doors M. On the sides of the press-box, near the upper end thereof, are the hinged outwardly-folding doors N, and onthe ends of the press-box, and also near the upper end thereof, are the hinged outwardlyfolding doors O. The bottom of the press-box is open. The sides and ends of the press-box are secured between rectangular inclosingframes l?, which are located at the upper and inner ends of the press-box, and the corners of the said frames fit in the grooves G in the inner corners of the vertical guiding-frame,
thus adapting the press-box to be moved vertical] y in the said frame.
R represents vertical iron rods, which pass through the corners of the frames P., and are secured thereto by clampingnuts S, which work on screw-threads made on the said rods. rIhe lower ends of the lrods R depend from the lower end of the press boX, and to the lower ends of the said rods is attached a platen-board, T, by means of nutsk U, which 6o are screwed onto the lower ends of the rods..
V represents a longitudinal horizontal shaft, which is journaled in the bearing-boxes K and extends centrally through the lower side of theverliralguidingframe u nder the press- 65 box. One end ofthe shaftV is provided with the right-hand screw threads V, and the other end of the said shaft is provided with the left-hand screw-threads V2, the said right and left hand threads extending very nearly 7t to the center of the shaft. To one end of the shalt is attached a crank-arm, W, by means of which the shaft may be rotated. lf the press is to be operated by steam or horse power or other suit-able motor, the crank WV will be removed and a suitable driving pulley attached to the end of the shaft V instead.
X represents sliding blocks, which are provided with screw-th readed openings that work upon the right and left hand screws of the 8o shalt V. A bracket, T, projects vertically from the center of the platen T, and togglejointed arms Y have their outer ends pivoted to the lower ends of the blocks X, the inner ends of the said toggle-jointed arms being pivoted to the bracket T. l
Z represents the follower, which is adapted to move vertically in the press-box from the under side of the same. From the lower side of the said follower, at the center thereof, de- 9o 4pends a bracket, Z'.
A represents a pair of toggle-jointed arms, the outer ends of which are pivoted to the upper ends of the sliding blocks X, and the inner jointed ends of the said toggle-arms are pivoted to the depending bracket Z.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the shaft V is turned in one direction, the blocks X are caused to recede from each other, and thereby straighten the toggle-arms Ioo A andY and cause them to lower the follower Z and raise the platen T. As the press-box is connected to the platen, it will be understood that the press-box is caused to partake of the motion of the platen, and thus it will be seen that as the follower is lowered the press-box is raised, the said follower and press-box thus moving simultaneouslyin opposite directions. In order to form a bale of cotton or other material the follower is caused to enter the lower open side of the pressbox, so as to form the bottom for the same, and the doors M, N, and O, at the upper end of the pressbox, are opened and a suitable quantity of cotton or other material to form a bale is thrown into the press-box, when the said doors are closed. The shaft V is then turned so as to cause the follower to be raised in the press-box and the latter to be lowered on the follower, thereby compressing the cotton or other material in the upper end ot' the press-box and forming a balethereof. As the follower and the pressbox both move simultaneously in opposite directions, it will be. understood that the operation of forming a bale is very quickly performed.
A balingfpress thus constructed is cheap and simple, is very strong and durable, is easily operated, and is not likely to get out of order. It will be noted that only a. tensile strain is exerted upon the toggle-jointed arms and the rods R, thus permitting the said arms and rods to be made comparatively slender and light without affecting the strength and durability of the press, thus enabling the latter to be constructed very cheaply and so light in weight as to enable it to be readily transported from one place to another.
Having thus described my invention It of the press-box, for the purpose set forth, the
lower end of the press being open to receive the follower, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the guiding-frame, thepress-box and platen movable in the said frame, the said press-box being rigidly connected to the said platen and having the doors M, forming one end, the other end being open, the'follower in the open end of the press-box, the right and left hand screw-threaded shaft,the blocks fitting on the said shaft, and the togglejointed levers connectingthe said blocks to the follower and platen, whereby the press-box and the follower will be moved simultaneously in opposite directions when the screwshaft is turned, substantially as described.
