IMPROVEMENT lN COTTON AND HAY PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,629, dated December 16, 1873 application filed May 31, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN S. CoLLINs, of Trenton, in the county of Gibson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cotton and Hay Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of my'press in longitudinal vertical section; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detached views of certain parts thereof.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cotton and hay press, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts 'in the several figures.

A represents a sill or bed-timber, of any Suitable dimensions, in which are framed four uprights, B B and (J G, and between these uprights is placed and secured the bale or packing-box E. The upper part of the front and rear sides of this box E is slotted horizontally, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the cotton is held down better when packing during the time the plunger or follower is withdrawn. D D are hinged doors in the sides of the box E, for removing the bale after it has been pressed. In the ends of the box are doors G G, placed on top of each other, to be drawn out as the pressinglever moves down. H is a cap-piece, extending from between the upper ends of the uprights B B, and between the outerend' of this cap-piece and the end of the sill A, is placed an upright screw, I, by means of a rod or long bolt, a, passing through. Near the lower end of the screw I is attached a lever, J, for revolving the same in either direction. K represents a double nut, placed on the screw I, and through which the front end of the lever L passes, this end of the lever being forked, so as to pass on each side of the screw. This lever is long enough so as to pass down between the uprights B B, and

also between the uprights G O, and has the follower or plunger M suitably attached to it. N represents a frame or collar, constructed as shown in Fig. 2, and hung upon the cap-piece H, its lower end supporting the lever L.

The lever L being thus supported by the frame or collar N, and the double nut K on the screw I, said screw is turned by means of the lever J, so as to raise the front end of the lever L and let the rear end, with the follower, down upon the cotton, the weight being sufficient for packing in, and with a reverse mo tion the follower is drawn up. This operation is continued until the required amount is in the box. The front end of the lever L is then carried farthur up, until the lower end of a bar, 0, suspended from the cap-piece H, enters a notch in the upper side of the lever, and forms the first fulcrum on which the lever is turned. The bar 0 takes hold as soon as the lever leaves the collar N. The upward movement of the front end of the lever L is continued, pressing down the follower until a second fulcrum ,is reached by passing a pin, b, through holes in the uprights B B, above the lever. The movement is still continued until a third fulcrum is reached by passing a pin, d, through the uprights O 0, above the rear end of the lever, when the screw I is reversed and the cotton or hay may be pressed as hard as desired. As the lever L descends, the end doors G G must be drawn out from under the same.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The horizontally-slotted bale or packing box E, provided with hinged doors D and draw or sliding doors G, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the slotted box E with doors D G, screw I, double nut K, lever L with fulcrum M, collar N, and fulcrums O b d, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
