Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS S. SMITH, OF TOONERS STATION, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN P. GILDERSLEEVE, OF NIVERVILLE, NEW YORK, AND JOHN W. BLAKE, OF SPRINGFIELD, 'MASSAOHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
S, ecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,393, dated July 29, 1873; application filed July 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. SMITH, of Tooners Station, in the county of Hardeman and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cotton-Presses; and I. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings makinga part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a vertical section of my invention.
My invention has relation to cottonpresses; and consists in thehereinafter-described construction and novel arrangement ot'devices for raising and lowering the press-follower.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the press-box, supported by the frame B. O is the press-follower, adapted to exert pressure by rising from the bottom of the box A, which is open. D designates two levers, pivoted to the under side of the follower, and fulcrumed between standards 61, secured to transverse movable shafts, d To the end of each lever is attached a rope, 01 These ropes pass around a Windlass or drum, E, the shaft of which holds a grooved pulley-wheel, F, and a ratchet, F. A rope, g, is secured to and is wound around said pulley-wheel, and thence passes to an upright Windlass, G.
By turning this windlass so as to wind the rope garound it, the windlass e is so turned as to wind up the ropes (Z and to draw the lower ends of the levers D toward each other, thereby elevating the press-follower and exerting a very strong pressure upon it. By unwinding the rope g from its Windlass, the levers are allowed to spread apart, and the follower to de- The cotton-press herein described, consisting of the levers D, pivoted to the under side of the movable follower O, toggle-arms d d attached to shafts d and levers l), pulley F provided with the Windlass E and ratchet-wheel F, Windlass G, and ropes d all arranged and operating in the manner set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS S. SMITH. Witnesses:
