IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON AND HAY PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,275, dated January 30, 187 2.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. MOGURRY, of Wall Hill, in the county of De Soto and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and valuuable Improvement in Cotton and Hay Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of an end elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
This invention has relation to hay-presses; and the novelty consists in the construction and peculiar arrangement of the follower, pulleys, ropes, and Windlass, whereby the follower is readily raised and depressed, as hereinafter described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the uprightframe of a hay-press, inclosing the press-box B, of the usual form, and having its lower section removable, so that the hay maybe taken out when pressed. The sides and ends of the lower section of the pressbOX rest in recesses formed in the sill 0. They are constructed with battens d, and over those of the sides are placed plates d, which are bent at their ends so as to overlap the ends of the end battens. D designates the follower-block, which is attached to a long horizontal beam, E, having a pulley, c, in the middle part and one, 6 at each end, journaled within suitable recesses. The ends of the beam E project through slots or openings 6 in the ends of the frame A. F designates a horizontal beam on top of the frame A and provided with a pulleywheel, g. A rope, is secured to said beam, thence brought down under the pulleye, thence up and over the pulley y, then down again, and around under a pulley, g journaled to a bracket, 9 and finally carried forward and wound around avertical Windlass, G, as shown. The Windlass G is journaled to arms G G attached to and extending forward from the press-frame and sill, and is operated through the medium of the lever h, to which hand or other power is applied. The follower-block is raised by turning the Windlass so that it shall take up the rope I indicates standards attached to the sillO outside ofthe frame A. They are arranged in oblique positions so as to face the Windlass G, and are provided with pulley-wheels z To the outside of each of the standards I is attached the end of a rope, I, which is brought up over one of the pulleys c, then down again and under the pulley-wheel Latter which it is carried forward and passed around the windlass Gr. Both ropes I encircle the Windlass in the same direction, so that by turning it one way both shall be taken up at the same time, and will thus draw down the follower, as in the operation of pressing. The ropes I and g pass to opposite sides of the Windlass, so that while the former are being taken up the latter shall be unwound, and vice versa.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hay or cotton-press, the combination .of the follower D, beam E, pulleys e i, ropes I hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. MCOURRY.
