UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TVILLIAM C. I'IAOKETT, OF GREENVILLE, MISSISSIPPI.
BALE-REMOVINS AND HFADlNG-UP ATTACHMENT FOR PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,909, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed May 31, 1889,
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WILLIAM CARNRIKE IIACKETT, of Greenville, in the county of \Vashington and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Bale-Removsimple and effective device for removing thebales from paling-presses and heading them up by power furnished by the pressing mechauism.
My invention consists in the combination,
with a baling-press, of a shaft provided with sheaves of two diameters, the smaller sheave being connected with the piston of the baling-press by means of a cable, and the larger sheave being provided with a cable or chain attached to tongs or hooks for engaging the bales, withdrawing them from the press, and heading them up.
It also consists in the combination, with the chain or cable, of an auxiliary cable wound around the larger sheave in a reverse direction and extending over a sheave adjoining the press to return the hooks or tongs to the press and within easy reach of the pressmen.
The shaft A, which is journaled in fixed supports, carries two sheaves B C, the sheave B being about half the diameter of the sheave (1. Around the sheave B is wrapped a cable D, which extends over the pulleys (L a, and is attached to some moving part of the baling-press D, preferably to the piston or piston-rod. Around the sheave C are wrapped two cables E E, the cable E being provided with tongs F, for engaging the bale. The
Serial No. 812,717. (No model.)
cable E is wound in the opposite direction around the sheave C, and extends over a pulley Gr near the press D, being connected with the cable E near the tongs F. Around the sheave O is also wound a cable H, which extends over a fixed pulley b and is attached to a weight 0. The said weight 0 serves to unwind the cable E and to wind up the cable E after they have been respectively wound and unwound in the operation of heading up a bale.
In operation, after a bale is compressed the hooks or tongs F are brought into engagement with one end of the bale. Then as the piston of the press D descends it carries down the follower G, releasesthe bale, unwinds the cable D from the sheave B, winds the cable E upon the sheave O, and unwinds the cable E. The same operation winds the cable I-I, lifting the weight 0. As the cable E is wound it turns the bale around on the lower platen and withdraws it from the press, when the bale swings into the position shown in broken lines at the left of Fig. 1. As the piston rises the weight 0 rewinds the cables E and D and unwinds the cable E, thus carrying forward the tongs F to the press within reach of the operator for engagement wit-h another bale.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the baling-press, of the shaft A, provided with the sheaves B the cable D, connected with some moving partof the baling-press, the cable E, provided with the hooks or tongs F, adapted to engage the bale and head it up, the cable II and weight 0, for unwinding the cable E, and the hooks or tongs returning cablevE and pulley G, substantially as specified.
