SHOWER BATH.
Patented Ded. 13,1881.

WMMKMMW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM KENDALL, OF LOGANSPORT, INDIANA.
SHOWER-BATH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 250,926, dated December 13, 1881.
Application filed September 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, WILLIAM KENDALL, of Logansport, Cass county, Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shower-Baths, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in those shower-baths which, in association with a suitable tub, possess a reservoir or waterholdercapable ofelevationtoanydesiredheight above the tub by means of a cord and windlass; and my improvements consist in details of construction whereby the shower apparatus is made available for use with a common hip or other bath-tub, with which it firmly connects when in condition for use, and from which it is quickly and easily detached and its component members separated for compact stowage and transportation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bathing apparatus embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 shows, on a larger scale, a portion of the bath-tub with one of its handles and a portion of the included post on that side. Fig. 3 shows, on a still larger scale, the component members of the handle separated from each other and from the tub. Fig. at shows the upper portion of post and contiguous portion of lintel detached. Fig. 5 shows a portion of reservoir and one guide-wing. Fig.6isavertical section through lower part of reservoir and through two-way cock and double outlet. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section through the same on the plane of said outlets.
A represents a bed or base, preferably of Wood, having gains or depressions a for reception of bath-tub B, and having mortises a for the lower extremities, c, of two similar posts, 0 O, which, when the apparatus is in condition for use, occupy hinged handles D on the tub sides. Each post has at its upper extremity a slot, 0, and pin 0, to receive and firmly hold the hooked extremity e of beam or lintel E. Sheaves F F, journaled to post and lintel, respectively, and indicated by dot ted lines in Fig. 1, receive a cord, G, one end of which is fastened in a bail extending athwart the topof an open reservoir or water-pot, H, its other end being made fast to drum I of Windlass J. Vertical slots 0 in the posts C is quite objectionable for pendent, and especiall y for vertically-adjustable ones, the action of the rope tending to disturb the equilibrium of the reservoir, and the rope being liable to entanglement with the person of the bather or with the stationary members of the apparatus.
I avoid these defects and secure a far more compact, neat, and convenient discharge by the association with the two oppositely-diverging discharge-spouts L L of a two-way cock, M, of the following construction: The funnelformed bottom h of the reservoir terminates in a conical cup, N, having diametrically-opposite ports, n a, corresponding in form and dimensions to the bore of the spouts L L, and at the center of its bottom an orifice, a, for the stem 0 of a spigot, 0, of the represented cup form, which fits and occupies the interior of the cup N, and has two diametrically-opposite ports, 0 0, that correspond in their transverse section with the ports a n of cup N, so that in one position of the spigot the ports 0 0, opening directly into the ports a it, permit a free, equal, and simultaneous discharge through both spouts L L. A handle, P, in the lower end of the spigot 0 enables its convenient manipulation by the bather. Roses Q at the terminals of spouts L L serve to spray or scatter the water in two showers, which, by elevation or depression of the reservoir, may be directed to any part of the person.
The hinged handles D on the tub-sides serve the double purpose of handles proper to lift the unattached tub by and of clamps or staples for holding the posts 0 C, as herein explained.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. In combination with tub B, having the handles D, the posts 0, having the guide-slots 0' for the wings K K of adjustable reservoir H, and having slot 0 and pin 0 for hooked extremity e of lintei E, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the slotted guideposts 0 O and vertically-adj ust-able reservoir H, the guide-wings K K, having dovetail shanks 7c, that occupy sockets h on the reservoir-sides, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto 10 set my hand.
WILLIAM KENDALL.
