SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,404, dated December 11, 1888.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SCOTT, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Set ash-Basins, Bath-Tubs, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to that class of set wash basins, bowls, bath-tubs, &c., in which a stand and overflow pipe is used as a valve to close the outlet or discharge passage of the bowl, tub, &c.; and it particularly relates to mechanism connected to said stand and overflow pipe for raising it to open said discharge passage, and to hold it so raised and to allow the seating of said pipe to close as a valve said passage.
In combination with a set wash bowl, basin, bath-tub, or other similar fixture, the mechanism of this invention consists, in substance, of a vertical rod, at one end portion flexibly connected, preferably detachably, to the stand and overflow pipe, a stationary and vertical tubular guideway or bearing for said rod in its up-and-down movement continued in a chambered post adapted to be attached to the basin-slab, a horizontal arbor turning in suitable bearings of said chambered post and having a handle or handles for convenience in turning it, a chain or other such line connecting said rod and arbor and adapted to be wound on and unwound from the arbor, a shoulder on said arbor, and diametricallylocated shoulders in said chambered post, all severally combined and arranged so as from the rotation in one direction of said arbor to raise the overflow-pipe from its seat and in the other direction to allow the overflow-pipe to lower to its seat, and all otherwise substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the mechanism of this invention is illustrated in connection with a set washbowl.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section from front to rear of a set wash-bowl, its stand and overflow pipe valve closed, its slab of marble or other material, and one form of construction and arrangement of the mechanism of this invention for lifting and lowering said pipe, as before stated. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the mechanism of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in detail, line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section, line 3 3*, Fig. 3.
In the drawings, A represents a set wash bowl or basin, having a vertical recess, B, at the center of its back portion, and at the lower end of this recess is the discharge-passage of the bowl; and D is a marble slab covering said vertical recess B and slightly overlapping the upper edges of the bowl or basin, all as ordinary.
E is the vertical stand and overflow pipe. This pipe at its lower end preferably is made externally tapering, fitting a corresponding taper in the open and water-receiving end F of the discharge-passage C of the bowl, and it has a central vertical guide-stem, G, entering a horizontal stationary guide-collar, H, of said passage. The upper end, J, of said pipe E isopen and flaring, and with the pipe set in its seat of the discharge-passage C its height is such as to allow to the bowl sufficient holding capacity for water, and at the same time secure it against the overflow of the water therefrom, all as well known.
K is a cross-bar at upper and open end portion of stand and overflow pipe and valve, and L is a vertical hook secured to the lower end and engaged with said cross-bar K. The hook L is secured to a rod, M, preferably round in horizontal transverse section, and which extends upward through a correspondingly-shaped vertical and tubular guideway or bearing, N, of a post, 0, fastened to the slab D in suitable position therefor.
P is a chain fastened to the upper end of k rod M and extending upward and at its upper end entered into a radial hole, Q, of a horizontal arbor, R, which is at right angles to and has its axis in a coincident vertical plane with the vertical axis of the rod M, and has its bearings at its opposite end portions of a hollow spherical head, S, of said post 0. The arbor R, placed in the spherical head S, is confined in place and against lateral movement by a shoulder, a, at one end and a headed screw, T, inserted in its opposite end and seated against the corresponding side of said head. The inner end of the fastenin -screw T, screwed into place, as stated, binds the end of the chain P within the hole Q of the arbor against the wall of said hole opposite thereto, and thus the chain is rigidly fastened to the arbor and by turning the arbor in opposite directions is wound about and off of it, as will hereinafter appear. U is a handle on the end of arbor R opposite to that receiving the attaching-screw T, as above explained, and V is a radial lug 011 arbor R at its end receiving said screw. This lug V is quartering as to theradial hole Q, receiving the chain P, as stated, and it is on the same side of the arbor as its handle.
NV W are two diametrically-located shoulders or abutments for lug V on the inner wall of the spherical head S of post 0. The arbor R, secured in the spherical head of the post 0, as above stated, when turned thereon it. The chain P, winding, lifts the stand and in one direction winds the chain upon, and in the other direction unwinds the chain P from overflow pipe valve, and in unwinding allows it to lower to its seat of the open end of the discharge-passage O of the bowl. The stand and overflow pipe lifted opens, and seated closes, said discharge-passage, except, however, that when seated it allows for the escape Mechanism such as above described for lifting and lowering a stand and overflow pipe valve is most simple, positive, practical, and efiicient. The head or collar of the arbor R and the head of its fastening-screw T are made to be flush and smooth and even with the exterior surface of the spherical head or shell S receiving them.

The combination, with a set wash-basin, A, or other similar fixture, having a dischargepassage, 0, and an overflow-pipe, E, acting as a valve to said passage and adapted to be raised from and lowered to its seat,.of a vertical rod, M, flexibly connected to and extended above the overflow-pipe, a fixed vertical guide-tube, N, for said -ro d M, and continued in a chambered post, 0, adapted to be fastened to the basin-slab D, a horizontalarbor, R, turning in suitable bearings of said post and having a handle for convenience in turning it, a lug or shoulder, V, of said arbor, a flexible line-such as a chain, P-connectin g arbor R and rod M and adapted to be wound on and unwound from the arbor, and shoulders or abutments XV NV within the chambered post, located diametrically opposite each other, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
