DOOR-STANCHION.
Application filed February 20, 1915.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. MoLToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Salem, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Stanchions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved door support or stanchion.
In planing the edges of a door and applying hinges thereto difficulty is frequently experienced in holding the door securely in a vertical position, this work being usually performed in buildings under construction and where work shop facilities are Wanting.
The present invention has for its object to produce a supporting device or stanchion of simple and inexpensive construction and of a size enabling it to be conveniently carried in a tool boX or kit and by the use of which a door may be securely held and sustained in position to be operated upon.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which is so constructed that the weight of the door operated upon will be effective to hold the supporting device securely in position for operation.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described which may be effectively used in connection with doors of various thicknesses and which will be self-adjusting so as to grip and hold doors of various thicknesses.
Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In theaccompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device, showing the same extended for operation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device folded. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the gripping members in full and in dotted lines Specification of Letters Patent.

The improved device comprises three similar approximately triangular leaves or wings made preferably of wood, although other material may be substituted. Two of these wings 15,15 which are the outer wings are connected with the third or center wing 1G by means of hinges 17, enabling the outer wings to be folded compactly upon the center wing, as seen in Fig. 2. The hinges are positioned at the extreme forward ends of the respective wings, the front faces 4of said wings being at right angles to the side faces thereof. Each wing is provided on its base or bottom face with a knob 18 of rubber or other anti-slipping material. The center wing 16 is also provided at its lower edge with a forwardly extending lip or tongue 19. The function of the knobs 18 is primarily to elevate the outer ends of the wings above the floor when the device is in operation so that their hinged ends may tilt down when the weight of the door is brought upon their said hinged ends by resting on the lip or tongue 19. Said knobs, when made of rubber or anti-slipping material, also assist in operation by preventingl the device from sliding on the floor.
It will be seen that by folding the wings 15 outward with respect to the center wing 16 the front end faces of said wings will be disposed angularly with respect to the front face of the center wing. When a door D is placed on edge, as seen in Fig. 4, with one end juxtaposed to the front end face of the center' wing and with its lower edge resting on the lip or tongue 19, it will be obvious that the side faces of the door may be gripped between the front end faces of the wings 15, the gripping action being increased by pushing the door against the center wing 16 so as to displace the latter in a rearwarddirection. It will be seen that the lip or tongue 19 receives the weight of the door that is to be operated upon, thereby causing the stanchion to be maintained in proper position without danger of being accidentally displaced. The said lip, moreover, serves to keep the bottom edge of the door slightly raised above the floor at one end thereof, thereby reducing the friction between the bottom edge of the door and the floor. In planing the top edge ot the door stress will thus be exerted in the direction of the stanchion, the tendency of which will be to displace the center wing ot' said stanchion rearwardly, thus causing the side wings to fold more tightly and exert a stronger @ripping action on the sides of the door. The door will thus be gripped and held securely in an upright vertical position7 enabling the edge to be conveniently planed, and hinges to be applied thereto.
lt is obvious that doors of various thicknesses may be operated upon since the wings l5 will readily adapt themselves thereto. While it is obvious that the wings should be made oil suitable thickness to enable them to exert a gripping action on doors of various thicknesses, the device need not be extremely bulky, and it may be readily folded in small compass.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

A door stanchion comprising a center wing and outer wings hingedly connected with said center wingadjacent to the front edges of the respective wings, said wings being provided near their outer ends with Hoor engaging knobs whereby said outer ends will be tilted upwardly with respect to the hinged ends.
3. A door stanchion comprising a center wing and outer wings hingedly connected with said center wing adjacent to the front edges of the respective wings, said wings having floor engaging knobs near their outer ends which are thereby tilted upwardly, said center wing being provided at its lower edge with a lip to partly sustain the weight of a door engaged by the stanchion.
