' 0. D. PETERSHANS 8v J. O. DAINES.
PORTABLE FENCE. No. 249,983. Patented Nqv. 22,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES D. PETERSHANS AND JUDSON G..DAINES, OF OARO, MICHIGAN.
PORTABLE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,983, dated November 22, 1881. Application filed August 9, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES D. PETER- SHANS and JUDsoN C. DAINES, of Caro, Tuscola county, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of that class of farm-fences commonly called portable fences, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrange ment, and combinations of the parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a side View of our improved fence. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of the posts.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the bed-pieces, which are secured at a to the lower ends of the posts B in any convenient manner. These posts B are provided with the recesses b, to receive the ends of the rails or bars 0, the ends ,of which may abut against eachother, be halved together, or they may lap, as may be the most desirable. These bars are held in their respective posts by means of face-plates D, the lower ends of which are slotted to embrace the bed-pieces, which are recessed to receive them; or their lower ends may be secured to place by means of a pin c, driven through the bed-piece in front of the face-plate, or both these means may be employed, if desired.
E are brace tie-bars, secured at one end to the end of the bed-pieces in any proper manner. The upper ends of these bars E pass through slots in the upper ends of the faceplates D and are secured to place by suitable pins, d. These bars are notched, so as to rest upon the top of the third bar of a four-bar fence, and they are also notched on their upper edges, so as to admit of the placing of the top bars or rails.
To prevent cattle from displacing the upper rail, the upper recesses of the posts should be closed and the bars lapped or halved together or a .pin may be inserted above the rail, which will answer the same purpose.
By this construction we provide a fence which is cheap in point of construction and is easily erected, while by removing the faceplate it can quickly be taken down.
What we claim as our invention is A fence consisting of the bed-pieces A,provided with cross-pins 0, posts B, provided with recesses b, rails or bars 0, brace-bars E, having cross-pins d, and face-pieces D, having slotted lower and upper ends to embrace the bed-pieces and brace-bars, substantially as described.
