SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,291, dated July 17, 1888.

Application filed October 14, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES XV. BENSOHO- TER, of Grand Rapids, in the county of \Vood and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of fences in which means are provided for widening the gateway beyond its ordinary limits for the passage of such farming implements as harvesters, hay-rakes, &c.; and it consists in providing a fence with a horizontally-movable panel next adjacent to the gateway, and a verticallyswinging gate pivoted to and sustained when open by said panel.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate and a movable fencepanel connected in accordance with my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are end views of the gate and panel when in the open position.

The fence may be of any suitable or approved construction, and terminates upon one side of the gateway in a fixed post, A, and upon the other side of the gateway in a movable panel comprising the gate-post B and rails b. The panel next adjacent to the movable panel hereinbefore mentioned terminates in afence-post, 0, upon which the inner ends of the rails Z) of the movable panel are supported and guided in any suitable manner, though I prefer to employ at this point a double post, as shown, the inner ends of the rails b of the movable panel being arranged between the adjacent faces of said double post. This double post 0 may be provided with blocks or wheels, upon which the lower edges of the rails I) may ride during the different adjustments of the movable panel.

To the lower end of the movable gate-post B is secured a block or foot, B, projecting some distance on either side of the post to support the same, and this foot is provided at suitable points with notches or perforations b to engage the upper ends of anchorstakes b fixed permanently in the ground. One or more of the rails, b, is provided with holes, in which, just in front of and behind the fixed post 0, pins 1) may be inserted to prevent the longitudinal movement of the movable panel.

It will be understood that the foot B is to be constructed of such shape and size as to support the movable gate-post B rigidly under ordinary circumstances, so that the gate maybe supported thereby, as in gates and gate-posts of ordinary construction; and to this end the post B and foot B may be braced together in any suitable or approved manner.

Instead of securing the movable panel to the anchor-stakes by means of the notched footblock and pin, I may form the post B of two parts joined at the lower ends, as shown in Fig. 3, by a thumb-screw, c", or similar device, so that the post may be caused to clamp the anchor-stake at its upper end and thereby hold the panel rigidly in place.

Having thus described my invention,whatI claim is 1. In combination with the fixed post 0, the horizontally sliding fence-panel B, the stop I), to prevent the retreat of said panel, and the vertically-swinging gate pivoted to the sliding panel, as shown.

2. In combination with a pivoted vertically swinging gate, a horizontally and longitudinally sliding frame having the gate attached to its forward end, and arranged to be sustaincd when open, wholly thereby.
