Description
l. P. MNNETT.
Farm-Fences.
Patented Sept.'8,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE. L
JOHN MONNETT, OF BUCYRUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-FENCES.
S peciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,888, dated September 8, 1874; application filed August 6, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN P. MONNETT, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
reference being had to the annexed drawing,
in Whichl Figure 1 is a side view, andFig. 2 an end view, of my improved fence. Fig..3 is a transverse section of the same through the dotted line an .fr of Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates toa certain improve-4 mentm fences; and it consists of posts mortised to receive, and into which fit, the rails or boards composing each panel of fence, retained in the said mortises by dividing-wedges and metallic framesembracin g the said posts, and into which fit and are confined the convergent ends of braces or supports, the divergent ends of which being suitably braced or connected together, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
` In the annexed drawing, A A refer to posts, of which there may be six to a panel of fence, placed two together, and upon opposite sides of the latter. The opposite' faces or sides .of these posts are provided with mortises a a, to receive, and into which fit, the rails or boa-rds B B of the panels of fence. C C are wedges or keys, inserted in the direction of the lengths ofthe posts A A, between the rails or boards of the respective panels of the fence, to retain the said rails or boards in their inortises. To retain the rails or boards of a single panel between their posts, only one post is mortised, and the wedge inserted between the other or opposite post, and the rails or boards let into the said mortised post. To receive the lateral pressure brought to bear upon the posts A A by the insertion of the wedges G C between the respective panels, or the panels and posts, and to hold the posts together, metallic frames D D are placed around the latter. These frames may be made from wire or other suitable metal. E E are diagonal braces, which also act as supports for the fence when placed in an elevated position, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper ends of these braces or supports are conned to the fence by the metallic frames D D, which they enter, and abut against the rails or boards of the fence, as seen in Fig. 2. The said braces may be further fastened to the fence or posts by nails or other suitable fastenin gs. These braces are connected together at their divergent ends, or thereabont, by a brace or bar, e.
By removing the wedges or keys AC C, the f rails or boards B B can be withdrawn from the posts A A, and the respective sections or panels of the fence separated, the metallic frames D D at the upper ends of the posts remaining in place, and those at. their lower ends falling oif, thus rendering the fence trans- A portable in parts, easily to be handled and shipped, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The posts A A, mortised to receive the rails or boards B B, in combination with the diagona-l braces E E, metal frames D D, and wedges o r keys C C, substantially as and for the purpose specified. Y 1,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JN0. P. MONNETT.
