JOHN- M. Rown, OF GLAIBORNE, OHIO, AssIGNOR or ONEHALF To JEREMIAH ELLINGWOOD.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 249,797', dated November 22, 1881.
Application tiled September 10, 1881. (No model.)
' exact description ot' the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer-l ence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification.
Figure l is a side view of a section of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken through one of the posts or braces. Fig. 3 is a top view. Fig. t is a View ot' one ofthe posts or braces detached, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of one ot' the panels.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to portable fences; and it consist-s in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will behereinafterfully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings hereto annexed, A represents one ot' my improved fence posts or supports, which consists of a pair ot parallel uprights, B B, secured between a pair of hori- Zontal foot-rails or basepieces, C G, and having their upper ends connected vby braces or binders D D. The ends of the base-pieces project beyond the uprights, as shown at E, thus forming slots F, through which the stakes G, which secure the posts, may be driven into the ground.
The fence-panels H are constructed of horizontal parallel rails or braces I, which are connected by a central vertical brace, J, and by vertical braces K at the ends of and on opposite sides of the panel.
Adjustable in the posts or uprights between the parts B, C, and D are a pairot' vertical rods or bars, L, between which the adjoining ends of the panels are adjusted, with the end braces, K, engaging each other, after which wedges M are driven between the uprights B and rods L, thus binding the `panels in position and securing the fence.
When itis desired to constructa curved orcircular fence-as, for instance, around a stackthe bars L may be placed between the fencepanels and the wedges M driven between the ends of the latter and the uprights B.
Common rails may also be employed in the construction of myimproved fence by adjusting or building the rails between the bars L and afterward tightening the latter by the wedges M, as above described.
When the panels are used a sliding gate may be formed at any place in the fence by temporarily withdrawing the wedges holding one of the panels, which may then be readily and conveniently slid aside.
From the foregoing description, taken -in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The fence is simple in construction, inexpensive, and may be easily and quickly put up or taken down.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States As an improvement in fences, the combination of the post A, consisting of uprights B, base-pieces C, and braces I), the adjustable and removable bars L, the panels H, having braces K, and the wedges M, substantially as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
JOHN M. Rown.
