Dec. 2o, 1949 E. E. HINES PLURAL COSMETIC CASE Filed June 2i, 194e Patented Dec. 20, 1949 UNlrEDNsrATEs Perslvr orner.
- `-PLURAL COSMETIC CASE "1"."E v`e E. Hines, Westport, Conn.
This invention relates to cosmetic containers or cases, and more especially to a plural cosmetic case for holding and automatically projecting for use two or more lip-stick or cosmetic pencils.
An object of the invention is to provide a compact ornamental holder for more than one lip stick, and single slide means for exposing for use any one lip stick as desired, without touching the lip stick.
Another` object is to provide such a device with means for covering the lip stick exposed end of the case.
A further object is to provide holding means for each lip stick to retain it in captivity in its compartment after once being inserted therein, and slide means associated with said holding means which by lateral sliding movement is adapted to connect to and operate either of two adjacent stick holders at the will of the user.
A still further object is to arrange the slide means operating end or button to project outside the outer covering means for the case, and adapted to facilitate the removal of the case from said covering means.
All these and other objects as suggested herebelow are attained by the method and means now to be described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view partly in section of a preferred embodiment of the operating features of the invention, showing one of the lip sticks or cosmetic pencils partially exposed for use.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the device of Fig. 1, taken through the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device of Fig. 1, showing the other or second lip stick somewhat projecting from the device, in use position.
And Fig. 4 is a preferred embodiment of a modied form of the outer or covering means for the lip stick case the preferred interior of which is shown in detail in the previous figures.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
In the embodiment disclosed, the invention comprises a rectangular casing I0, which may be of metal or plastic, having one closed end lila, the opposite end being open, and a longitudinal dividing wall 22 having its end spaced from the casing end Illa, as shown in Fig. 1.
On the top side of casing ID is a U-shaped opening I I, Fig. 3, its side legs being equi-spaced from the top edge of dividing wall 22 and each centered above the compartment below, as shown in Fig. 1, and the connecting leg being somewhat to the Application June 21, 1946, Serial No. 678,334 1 Claim. (Cl. 20G-56) right of being over the adjacent end of wall 22,`as
there shown. i j Lip sticks or cosmetic pencils IZ and i3 are of a size adapted to move freely within their respective compartments, and each one has its inner end attached to a carrier member I4, I5 respectively. Carrier I4 has a holding lug I'I attached to its enclosing end portion, as shown in Fig. 2, and carrier I5 has a similar lug I6 similarly positioned, its top view being shown in Fig. l, the free flange ends of these lugs pointing toward one another.
Slide button I8 rides on the casing surface over opening I I, and carries below it a vertical pin I9 of reduced diameter under said button to permit the unit to slide freely in opening II. Thus a lateral movement from the center end position of button I8 will permit its pin lil to slide into connectingi position either with lug It or I'I, to operate either carrier member I5 or I4, respectively, which in turn moves to exposed position the pencil I3 or I2 respectively, as desired by the user. Each pencil may be of a different color shade or a different substance, and to expose either one, the other must iirst be returned to its enclosed or out-of-the-way position. And when slide button I8 is moved to its center position out of engagement with either lug, neither pencil has any means of moving it. And it will be understood that carriers I3, I4 have a sliding friction fit with the interior of their compartments, preventing their movement until the button is operated.
A cover member 2I hinged at 2li, may serve to close the open end of casing IE). Or preferably, an outer cover 23, Fig. 4, of a shape and size to just enclose casing I0, may be used. Casing I0 is inserted in cover 23 stick-end rst, its closed end Illa when fully inserted serving as the end wall to complete cover 23, as shown.
An open-ended slot 24 in the top of member 23 is adapted to receive projecting button I8 for aligning end Il'la, and this button is used for withdrawing casing I0 from cover 23 for use of the device.
One of the pencils may be for the eye brows, the other for the lips. A single slide operates both. Each pencil is attached to its carrier, which is held captive in the casing, preventing danger of loss or breakage. Pencils are held in the carriers by friction or adhesion of the material, usually.
Having now described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which Letters Patent of the United States is desired, is:
A plural cosmetic case comprising a casing having opposed external topand bottom walls, opposed external side walls, and an external end wall, the end of said casing opposed to said end wall being open; a single centrally disposed dividing wall connected at its upper and lower edges to said top and bottom walls and dividing said casing into two longitudinal compartments, there being a communication space between said compartments contiguous to said end well; said top wall having a U-shaped slot, its respective side leg portions extending longitudinally along the longitudinal center lines of said compartments and. having their inner edges outwardly spaced from said dividing wall, and its transverse connecting portion extending across said communication space; a pair of cosmetic pencil carriers slideably engaged in said respective compartments having frictional engagement with the compartment walls to normally retain said carriers against movement; a slide member engaged in said slot and projecting inwardly; and a hookshaped lug upon the inner end of each of said carriers-including a transverse portion disposed across the longitudinal path of movement of said slide member in said slot, said lugs facing each other and being respectively engageable by said slide member through movement of said slide `member in one or the other direction in said REFERENCES CITED The lfollowing references are of record in the le of this -paten-"t:
