MEAT=HANGER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,131, dated November 1, 1881. Application filed August 22, 1881. *(No model.)

To all tohom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN LAWSON WHITE, of Wakefield, in the county of Sussex and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Meat-Han gers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved meat-hanger when closed, and Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same when open.

My invention relates to improvements in meat-hangers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, (t represents a metallic rod, the diameter of which may be varied with the weight or size of the piece of meat to be suspended from it. The lower end, m, of the rod to is made straight, and pointed at its outer end, so that it may be readily inserted or forced into a piece of meat to be suspended. The rod a is bent from its straight portion at upwardly to form the side I) of the hanger, and having a loop, 0, at its upper end, which engages with a loop, d, on the upper end of a bent rod, 0, having a hook, h, at its lower end, adapted to engage with the straight part m of the rod when it is sprung over in place and locked with the hook h. By this construction the bent rod 6 is pivotally secured to the upper end of the part b of the rod a, whereby, after the straight part m of the rod a, has been forced through the meat, the hook it can be more readily locked than if the hanger were made in one piece. A loop, is, is thus formed between the sides b e and the straight portion v of the rod, which may be inserted over a nail or other fastening, whereby a piece of meat may be suspended, the pointed end of the rod being passed through the upper end of the meat or bag inclosing it, and the hooked end locked, leaving the upper part of the loop 70 open.

A number of pieces of meat, each secured to a meat-hanger, as described, may be suspended from the joists of a meat-house by inserting a transverse bar of wood through the loops of 50 the hangers and placing the opposite ends of the transverse bar on the opposite joists.
