Description

UNTTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL L. OROSGRAVE, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,919, dated November 1, 1881. Application filed September27',1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. CROSGRAVE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lounges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to combine a simple and durable head-resting device with a lounge; and itconsists ofan upholstered headrest having a stop-joint to prevent it from being opened out too far, in combination with a lounge to which it isjointed, so as to open upward and increase the length of the head-rest when required, or fold down so as to form an ordinary lounge, as will be more clearly hereinafter shown by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the head-rest closed so as to form an ordinary lounge. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view, showing the head-rest opened up soas to form an easy-resting lounge for the head and back; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached view otone of the head-rest hinges.
A represents an ordinary lounge. It is provided with the usual back, B, and legs 0.
1) represents the jointed or extension headrest. It is formed so as to appear like an ordinary head-rest when shut down, (see Fig. 1,)
and is padded on both sides, so that either side will act as a cushion when required for use. The head-rest D is jointed to the head of the lounge at or about the point E (see Fig. 1) by two or more hinges, F, provided with the stops G H, which prevent it from being turned out too far when opened, as shown in Fig. 3, in which the dotted lines I show a portion of a lounge and a head-rest, to which they are connected; but in some cases the stops G or H may be made adjustable by means ofset-screws J (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3) or other well-known means.
It will now be seen that the lounge may be used as an ordinary lounge, having the usual head-rest to act as a pillow; or the head-rest may be turned back, and it will then serve as an easy seat, having an inclined cushioned back and head-rest.
I claim as my invention- A lounge provided with an upwardly-swinging head-rest, D, having a cushion on both sides, so that either side may be used, as specified, and secured to the lounge by hinges F, provided with stops G H, as and for the purposes described.
