UNITED STATES PATENTY OFFICE.
THOMAS SODEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SOFA-BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,925, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed March 16, 1882.
(No model.)
To alt whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS SODEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New Yorlr,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SofafBedsteads, of' which the following is a speciiieation, reference/being had therein to the accompanying drawings.V
Thisinveution has relation to sofa-bedsteads; and its object is to provide a simple, durable, and comfortable lounge or sofa which may in a moment be converted into an equally comfortable bed; and the novelty consist-s in the construction ot' the same, as will lie-hereinafter more fully set i'orth, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the iuvention. y
is hinged to the base-frame A, and is the seatof the lounge when folded, while the reverse or bottom side is provided with a suitable spring-mattress, O, which forms one-half of the bed-surface when opened. This frame B is provided with the upright head-rests D D, to the rear ot which are attached the feet d, which rest on the floor and support the frame-section B when in use as a bed.
E is the back of the lounge, and is provided with an ornamental rail, e, which is removed when in use as a bed. This back E is hinged to the base-frame section A by the hinged braces F. This allows the back E to be folded down, as shown in Fig. 3, and the spring-mattress G, secured to the back E, to form one-half of the bed. The mattress-back G during the day is always exposed to the a-ir, and conse quently is kept thoroughly ventilated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is-
In a convertible sofa-bedstead, the frame A, provided with the hinged back E and brace F,
' in combination with the reversible front portion, B O D, substantiallyT as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afi-1X my signature in presence of two witnesses.
