Description

Nov 1, 1949. J. M. YAGODNIK POCKET STRUCTURE Filed Sept. 13,- 1946 IN VEN TOR.
Joseph 34/ )6 min I 15, 7 172 rn e Patented Nov. 1, 1 949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POCKET STRUCTURE Joseph W. .Yagodnik, Chicago, Ill.
Application September 13, 1946, Serial No. 696,663
1 Claim.
This invention relates to pocket structures for garments or the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a dual pocket structure wherein one pocket may be utilized for utility purposes and the other as a safety pocket adapted to prevent picking or otherwise unlawful access to the interior thereof.
Viewed from another aspect, it is a specific object of the invention to provide, in addition to a utility pocket, a safety pocket in combination with the garment, having an entrance provided by a flap, beneath which a wall of the safety pocket is projected and detachably secured to guard against unauthorized access to the interior of the safety pocket.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a garment having incorporated therein a pocket structure embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the safety pocket with the entrance slit thereof in open condition;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail viewtaken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank from which portions of my pocket structure are formed.
The several objects of my invention are accomplished by the preferred form of construction illustrated in the drawings.
In this connection, a garment section is indicated at ID. This garment section It] may be a shirt, jacket, overalls or the like. I do not wish to be limited to the particular garment that the garment section In illustrates but for purposes of clarity, let it be assumed that the garment section 16 is that of a shirt.
To the garment section In is secured my improved pocket structure P. This pocket structure comprises an elongated strip of material ll having one edge portion folded upon itself as at l2. To this edge portion I2 is secured in a well known manner the female sections H! of snap buttons I4. This strip of material H is folded upon itself upon the line l5, and after severing the same along the line IS, the edge portions 16 adjacent these lines of severance 15 are folded back upon themselves and the two edge portions l6 stitched together as at ll. The opposite longitudinal edge portions H are then secured together to form the outer or safety pocket [8. The end portion l9 of the section 20 of this strip H is provided with a tongue 2|. The outer end portion of the section 22 of the elongated strip l I is folded back upon itself along the line 23 and the edge portion 24 thereof secured to the adjacent edge portions 25 of the section 22, thereby to provide a flap 26 secured along three sides a by the stitching 21, leaving a slit 28 for the projection therebeneath of the tongue 21. This tongue 2| has secured thereto in any approved manner the male sections 29 of the snap buttons I4, whereby the tongue 2i may be latched beneath the flap 26 to obstruct access to the interior of the safety pocket 8. and having the shape previously described, is now secured to the garment section Ill through the medium of stitches 30, thereby to provide the utility pocket 3| between the garment section It] and the safety pocket 3.
Valuable articles may be carried in the safety pocket l8 while articles of inconsequential value, such as a handkerchief or the like, may be carried in the utility pocket 3!.
By the construction herein set forth, I have provided a pocket structure serving a dual purpose of permitting the wearer of the garment with which the pocket is associated to have the benefit and use of a utility pocket as well as a safety pocket. By utility pocket, I mean a pocket in which articles of little or no value are carried and which is not essential to be closed by a flap.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A pocket structure comprising a. utility pocket formed of a single piece of material folded upon a line of severance to provide adjacent walls of the pocket stitched together, with one end portion of one of said walls folded back upon the adjacent end portion of the other of the walls to provide a flap, a tongue provided by the said adjacent end portion of said other wall and adapted for insertion beneath the flap, said utility pocket being stitched to the outer surface of a garment section to provide with said surface an open The strip ll, being formed in the manner pocket to the rear of the utility pocket, and
means for releasably connecting the tongue to the flap, with the tongue inserted beneath the flap. JOSEPH W. YAGODNIK.
