Description

Aug. 26, 1969 5. E. CASTER AUXILIARY POCKET FOR GARMENTS Filed Nov. 8, 1967 ELDRED E. CASTER INVENTOR.
United States Patent Ofiice 3,462,764 Patented Aug. 26, 1969 3,462,764 AUXILIARY POCKET FOR GARMENTS Eldred E. Caster, Rte. 1, Box 26, Scotts Mills, Oreg. 97375 Filed Nov. 8, 1967, Ser. No. 681,412 Int. Cl. A41d 27/20 US. Cl. 2252 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An auxiliary trouser leg pocket comprising a vertically disposed panel stitched along both of its sides and across its bottom edge to the trouser leg materlal. The top free edge of the panel which provides an access opening to the pocket is upwardly and rearwardly mclmed relative to the trouser leg and is provided with a parallel closure flap of elasticized material stitched along its top edge superjacent the top edge of the panel and to both sides of the trouser leg in laterally spaced relation to the sides of the panel thereby providing a closure for normally maintaining the pocket access opening closed.
This invention relates to improvements in wearing apparel and more particularly to auxiliary pockets for use in connection with the leg portions of garments such as overalls, trousers and similar garments worn by tradesmen.
The principal objects of the invention are:
To provide a pocket of the character described adapted to receive and hold various types of hand tools against accidental or unintentional removal from the pocket when the wearer of the garment assumes a stooping or kneeling position.
To provide a pocket which may be sewed to elther the outside or inside of the garment leg and accessible from the exterior thereof through an upwardly and rearwardly inclined slit in the garment material and provided with an overlying protective flap or cover.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereolf and in which:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of a pair of trousers having a pocket made in accordance with my invention attached to the exterior of one trouser leg.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the pocket.
FIGURE 3 is a side elevational view of FIGURE 2 partly in section, as viewed approximately along the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 2 showing the pocket and a closure flap as they would appear when distorted to accommodate a tool being inserted into or removed from the pocket.
FIGURE 5 is a modification showing a pocket disposed on the interior of the trouser leg, with fragments broken away, and accessible from the exterior thereof, and
FIGURE 6 is a side elevational view of FIGURE 5.
With continuing reference to the drawing wherein like reference numerals designate like parts, numeral 1 indicates generally a trouser leg showing my new and improved pocket secured to the exterior of the trouser leg as by stitching and within convenient reach of the wearer of the trousers.
As best illustrated in FIGURES 2 and 3, the' pocket comprises a panel 2 stitched along both of its side edges as at 3 and 4 and across the bottom as at 5 to the exterior of the trouser leg. Side edge 3 of the panel extends upwardly a greater distance than the opposite edge 4.
The top free edge 6 of the panel 2 is thus inclined upwardly and rearwardly as shown and provided with a closure flap 10 which is slightly longer than the width of the pocket and stitched along its top edge superjacent the top edge 6 of panel 2 as at 11 and downwardly as at 12 and 13 in laterally spaced relation to the side edges of the panel as shown.
Thus, with the rearward portion of the pocket being deeper than the front, the pocket will automatically guide any deposited article or tool indicated diagrammatically at T, into a position where it will be held against displacement in any of the wearers assumed positions, as above pointed out.
The closure flap 10 is preferably, though not restrictively, made of elasticized material to render the interior of the pocket accessible as illustrated in FIGURE 4 by upward flexing of the flap between its side stitching 12 and 13.
In the modified form of the invention shown in FIG- URES 5 and 6, the pocket is disposed on the interior of the trouser leg 1A and comprises a front wall 15 and rear wall 16 sewed together along both of their sides as at 17 and 18 and across the bottom (not shown) in the usual manner. This pocket is suspended on the interior of the trouser leg by stitching both horizontal top edges 20 of the front and rear pocket walls to the garment material as at 21, and by stitching only the inclined top edge 22 of the front wall 15 to the garment material as at 23 closely adjacent the bottom edge 24 of an inclined slit 25 which provides access to the interior of the pocket.
The slit 25 is normally covered with a flexible flap 10A stitched as at 11A, 12A and 13A to the exterior of the trouser leg so that, here as in the first form of the invention, the interior of the pocket is accessible for the insertion or removal of a tool as shown in FIGURE 4 by upward flexing of the closure flap.
In both forms of the invention each elasticized flap serves the useful purpose of preventing accidental or unintentional removal'of contents of the pocket by normally maintaining its top marginal portion under tension and the overlap of the flap renders the slit in the trouser leg closed against atmospheric conditions.
What I claim is:
1. In a trouser leg, a pocket comprising a vertically disposed panel having two parallel side edges and a bottom edge at right angles to said side edges,
said panel secured to the trouser leg by stitching along both side edges of the panel and across said bottom edge thereof,
one of said side edges extending upwardly a greater distance than the other side edge whereby to provide a free full-width pocket opening inclined upwardly and rearwardly relative to said trouser leg,
a flap of elasticized material of parallelogram shape completely overlapping said inclined pocket opening, the top and bottom edges of the flap being parallel to the pocket opening and the side edges of the flap being beyond and parallel to the side edges of the pocket panel,
