ADJUSTABLE WAIS'fBAND IN PAJAMA TROUSERS Filed March is, 1948 I INVENTOR. 'Ja'mue/ Wilkcr Patented Sept. 1949 umrao sures PATENT OFFICE ADJUSTABLE TROUSE Samuel Wilker, N fliwaik, 'GOiii'l. Application March 13, 194's, Serial No. 14:70?
3 claims.
present invention relates to a pajamagarment, and more particularl "to the "waistband *of p l' ma trousers.
It is the abject "of the present iiiventiontb provide pajama trousers with a waistband or maximum adjustability, whereby a single garment may be adjusted to fit any waist size *witlh'n a large range of sizes.
It is also an "object of the present invention to provide pajama troirsers or the character described in which the waistband adjust'rrre'nt is elastic, to render the garment of maximum comfort in wear.
It is another object oi the present invention to provide a pajama garment of the character described in which the waistband adjustment, once set, may be definitely maintained without the need "for readjustment every time the garmentis .put on or closed aibijiit the .body.
It is a further object oftlre ipi'esent iifv'e'ntion to provide pajama trousers of the character described in which theelastic waistband adj u'sti-iig means is 'of simple and economic construction and may be easily, readily and conven iehtly replaced, in whole or in part, by any one, without requiring any great skill for such operation.
It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a pajama trouser of the character described which may be adjusted for size with great speed, ease and convenience and which may be worn with comfort, safety and a minimum of irritation on the body.
The foregoing and other advantages and superiorities of the pajama trousers of the present invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawings and from the description following. It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, to make the principles and practice of the invention more readily comprehensible, and without any intent of limiting the invention to the specific details therein shown.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in rear elevation of pajama trousers having the adjusting means of the present invention; partly broken away to show details of construction and arrangement; and
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the same showing the adjusting means in one adjusted position.
r Referrin ih'ol specifically to the accempahy- 'ihg drawings, the pajama trousers, in, ar proviued with a waistband, it, which has a tuhuiar heit housing, 12, along a portion or its back; the tabuiar belt housin l2 haying terminal open- 13, to the exterior a: the garment.
Arranged Within the belt homing, I- 2 an adjusting pelt, general-1y "designated as M, having a eentrai elastic part, "IS, which may he n the form offlasti'c wubihg or the iike and whieh is or a length subs'rantiaiiy less than the len th oi the belt housing, 12. A preferably nenelast-ic draw strap, it, is secure to each end or the elastic belt part, I5, winch may be er conventional t pe and material, such-as ribbon, wetting crthe like.
Secured to each end of the elastic beilt element, I5, is a relatively short tab, 11, formed preier ahry integrally with the draw it, and havmg, at its end a fastening e ment or fastening siren buttcrihei-e, is, or the like, whereby it may be secured in cooperating fastenmg means or 'fastefimg "element, such as thebutton, "I 9, er the like secured t the waistband, I 1, at or adjacent each 'bpenihg, It, at the belt nousing, l2.
It is apparent that when the belt, I4, is inserted through the belt housing, I 2, and the tabs, I1, buttoned in place on the buttons, IS, the back of the garment will become foreshortened and gathered or shirred, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, by reason of the lesser length of the combined elastic belt portion, l5, and tabs, H, as compared with the length of the belt housing, I 2, or the distance bet-ween the buttons, I9. When the belt, I4, is so arranged and secured, it forms or confers a mean waist size upon the garment which may have the conventional fly, 20, and fly closing means, 2!, at the front thereof.
There are also provided at each side of the waistband, II, at a distance from the openings, l3, a tie strap or band, 22, so that if the waist of the wearer is of lesser size than the mean, normal size of the garment, then the draw straps, l6, and their respective tie bands, 22, may be tied together to adjust the waist size to less than the mean or normal size.
It will also be apparent that once so adjusted to wearers size, the waist will remain indefinitely in such adjusted size through repeated opening and closing of the fly, without need for readjustment each time.
Conversely, if the girth of the wearer is too great to wear the garment comfortably at normal or mean size, in spite of the elasticity of the belt, I4, then one or both of the ends of the elastic belt portion, [5, may be detached from the waistband, II, as by unbuttoning one or both of the tabs, l1, thus letting out the shirring, until the proper size adjustment is attained and then tying the draw straps, IE, to the tie bands, 22, to efiect a substantially permanent size adjustment of the garment waist.
This completes the description of one preferred embodiment of pajama trousers of the present invention. It will be readily apparent that such trousers are adjustable for a maximum range of sizes; that such adjustment is substantially permanent for practical purposes; that the adjusting belt, while fixed in position on the garment, is nevertheless elastic and afiords maximum comfort; that the adjusting belt is removable and replaceable in whole or in part and that the tying knits by which the belt is fixed in adjusted position are disposed where they will cause the least discomfort and irritation to the wearer.
It will also be apparent that the adjusting means of the present invention is of simple construction; that it may be provided on garments with a minimum of cost in labor and materials; and it may be easily and conveniently manipulated and used by the wearer.
It will further be apparent that many modifications and variations may be made in the embodiment of the invention hereinabove described, in accordance with the principles set forth, by any one skilled in the art, without the use of any inventive ingenuity. I desire, therefore, to be protected for any and all such modifications and variations that may be made within the spirit of the present invention and the scope of the claims hereto appended.
What I claim is:
1. Pajama trousers or the like, having a waistband, said waistband having a rear tubular portion open at its ends to the exterior of the garment, a fastening element secured to the waistband at each of said openings, a band arranged in said tubular portion, said band having a central elastic portion of lesser length than said tubular portion and non-elastic draw straps secured at each end of said elastic portion and extending outwardly of said tubular portion, means at each end of said elastic portion whereby it may be secured on said fastening element, and a tie band at each side of the said waistband, spaced from its adjacent tubular portion opening and adapted to be tied to one of said draw straps.
2. Pajama trousers or the like having a waistband, said waistband having a rear tubular portion open at its ends to the exterior of the garment, a fastening element secured to the waistband at each of said openings, a band arranged in said tubular waistband portion, said band having a central elastic portion having non-elastic tabs secured to its ends the combined length of said elastic portion and tabs being less than the length of said tubular waistband portion, each of said tabs having cooperating fastening means adapted to be interengaged with said first named fastening elements, draw straps secured to each end of said elastic belt portion and extending from said tubular waistband portion, and tie bands secured to the waistband at the sides of the garment, spaced from said openings of the tubular portion and adapted to be adjustably tied to said draw straps.
3. The pajama trousers of claim 2, wherein the said tabs and the said draw straps are integrally formed.
