MILITARY-COAT PROTECTOR O R GUARD FOR BAYON ETS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,003, dated October4, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, DANIEL W. ZANTZINGER, a citizen of the United States. residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Military-Goat Protectors or Guards for Bayonets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to military-coat pro.- tectors or guards for bayonets, the object being to provide a convenient attachment for military belts that will protect the coat of the wearer from injury by frictional contact of the bayonet-stock; and theinvention consists,first, in the combination, with a military waist-belt, of a guard-flap adapted to be interposed between the clothing and the upper end of a bayonet-scabbard, whereby the coat is protected from wear by frictional contact with the bayonet-stock; second, in the combination, with a military belt and bayonet-'scabbard, of a bayonet-guard or coat-protector and an adjustable attaching strap and loop, whereby the bayonet-scabbard is supported and the stock of the bayonet held from contact with the clothing; and,further, in certain details ofconstruction, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

' In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a view of a belt with guard or protector and bayonetscabbard in position. Fig. 2 is an inner view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating a modified form of my invention.

Like letters indicate like parts in the several views.

The letter A indicates a military belt, which may be made of any suitable material, and is provided with the usual clasp or buckle and necessary attachments.

B is a loop for supporting the bayonet-scabbard O, which is attached thereto, by means'of a suitable button or clasp,-D, in any appropriate manner.

When the bayonet is carried in its scabbard in the usual manner,-its stock resting against the clothing is liable at every movement to injuriously bear upon and wear the same, thus causing considerable damage in a short time.

In order to overcome this difliculty and effectually protect the clothing from such wear, I employ a guard or protector, E, which consists of a flap of any suitable material, preferably (No model.)

the same as that of which the belt is composed. This flap is of sufficient size to cover that portion of the coat or other clothing ezgposed to wear by contact with the bayonetstock.

The guard-flap or protector E is provided with hooks F, by which it may be attached, as shown in Fig. 2, to the loop B, and to a strap, G, provided with suitable eyes or apertures, which is attached to theinner side of the belt or the strap G may be dispelled with and the flap E attached by passing the ends of the of the flap to the belt, or the flap may be pro-' vided with two or more loops adapted to attach it to the belt, in which case the hooks F, before described, may be entirely dispensed with.

It will be seen that the flap E, when applied to the waist-belt A, projects below the same, and extends front and back sufficiently far to completely cover that portion of the clothing which is ordinarily exposed to wear from contact with the bayonet-stock and the upper end of the scabbard.

This device forms a perfect guard and protector for the purpose designed, and may be readily applied with but little trouble or expense. Its appearance is also ornametai, and gives a finish to the belt and its attachments. Having thus described my invention, what I claimis 1. The combination, with a military waistbelt, of a bayonet-guard or protector, and an adjustable attaching strap and loop, whereby the bayonet-scabbard is supported and the stock of the bayonet held from contact with the clothing, substantially as described.
