FASTENING MEANS FOR TROUSERS AND OTHER GARMENTS Filed Jan. 10, 1946 @garmentmonta'ining thepouches in taut "condittion.
Patented June 28, 1949 s ron rritousnns AND GARMENTS Marcus Manly :Isaacs, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Application January 10, 1946, Serial No. $405210 FASTENING OTHER In Australia January lfllaims. (Cl. 2--.23 7-) 1 In connection with trousers, skirts and other garments it is known to provide means tor supporting and/or fastening or securing samenat the Waistband. Frequently s'uch meanscompr ise .a flap orextensicn device the parts of which are permanently secured to said flap and to some other part or the "waistband, respectively, for instance to a second .flap.
Both the hook and theeye of the device are frequently of a wi'd h corresponding to that @of the flap "or other part of the band, or secured to them by tapering sections. Nevertheless, experience has proved that the tightening strain is taken only by a narrow portion, or :portions, of the .flap (flaps) and waistbandsso that these .become wrinkled and distorted .in use, the result being that the trousers or other garment become uncomfortable in wear and the waistband itself is of unsightly appearance.
It is one object of the present .invention to provide an cimproved hook-and eyedevice for supporting and/or fastening :means "of the kind referred to, so idesignedras to assure: even distribution of the strain all over the :Widthsof the flap (flaps) ando'ther parts .of :the waistband.
A .further object of the invention .is to .iprovide animproved design of waistband suitable forrthe use of the hook-and-eye device iaccording'to this invention.
A still further objectof theainventi'on is to provide a hook-.and-eye devicelthe members .of which, though firmly retainedin ;=the garment during use, are so attached thereto-that they may be easily removed therefromor instance whilst :the garment-is being cleaned sorupressed and can be re-attached by a simple coperation notrequiring anyiskill.
'With these objects'in-view therfastenin'g means according to the iinvention comprises cseparate .hook and eye .members =each of which :has' a base element, whereas thegarment :is provided :with ,pouches -for the aocommodation of the base selementsof the hook member, and ofitheveyeemem- -ber, respectively, the transverse "width =andlthe contour of each vzbase element :corre-sponding {to the width :andcontour .of the .pouehior itsaccommcdation and the arrangement of :the
pouches in the garment and ithe iconstruction of the members being such that, When the garment .is t closed i in weary the base-aeiements transfer the =clo'sing strain uniformly over "the entire widths of: the rpouches and thus i keep the section of the band, and a hook and-eye On zaygar-ment equipped for fastening means acconding to the invention the pouches areprolvided Binrpairs in a :section or sections tog-be 4c1'osed,.for instance in a proper section 01 sec- .tions nf its waistband. These pouches may be permanently open to 'permit .detachment of the members "of the ifastiening .rneans whenever required, and "the said :members may accordingly the :iormed as clips which maybe attached to the garment without :sewing.
In order to more particularly :describe the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawing which, by .Way 'Of example, illustrates some specific forms of the improved :tastening :means and its 'use on "the waistband of tselfsupporting 'strousers, and wherein:

Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views showing a modified form of hook ,member ;and gene mem- :ber, respectively, 10f -the =fastjening means;
Figs. 7= ;:and :8 are perspective views showing another {modified form of the fastening means according to the invention, Fig. :8 illustrating the said fastening means applied .to the waistband vof a garment.
:EI'hewaistbandsection illustrated in Fig. 1 :in-
Each of :these .flaps is :iormed with a pouch E .and =B respectively, -,of a suitable "depth, and :of a width 1b .which tsubstantially equals that of the iflap in which rit .-is formed. "Thegpouches BandB' are each adaptedto accommodate-chem" the separate members-mock member :0 1 and eye member D, respectively-of -the fastening :means :acoording=to theiinvention.
The :hOOk .member 0 aslshown in 2 loomprises -a thinplate element la!) the transverse ,Widthof which equals the width of the (pouch B wherein it. is accommodatedioruse. The con- .tour ,of theend CaOf element 3 that of the pouch or pocket B in which it is accommodated for use. The contour of the end (1 of the element D corresponds accurately to that of the bottom of the pouch B. At its op- Dosite end the element D is formed with an extension or tongue M which is returned and is formed to constitute the eye portion proper of the device. In the form shown the extension I4 is provided with a number of spaced slots l5, each of which constitutes an eye in which the hook I2 of the fastening device may selectively be placed in use, for instance in the manner shown in Fig. 4.
The plate elements C and D may be perfectly flat as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. However, if so desired, they may be slightly curved in the manner depicted in Fig. 4 to correspond to the contour of the closed garment while in use.
When the fastening device is used, the strain to be taken is transmitted from the waistband to the operative parts of the device via the above described two plate elements C and D, each of which bears with its end and (1 against the bottom of the pouch B and B, respectively, in which it is located, engaging the said bottom over its entire width to. Thus the elements C and D tension the flaps A and A of the waistband across their entire widths, thereby preventing the formation of wrinkles, folds and other distortions of the waistband duringwear of the garment of which it forms part.
Preferably the apertures E and E, respectively, through which the two plate elements C and D of the hook-and-eye device are inserted into the respective pouches B and B, remain open, and thus the members C and D are detachable from the pouches into which they are placed for use, so that they may be easily removed therefrom, for instance while the trousers or other garment is being cleaned or pressed. Accordingly the tongues II and M, respectively, of the two members C and D are preferablymade to spring against'their respective base plates and thus to act as clips which prevent undesired disengagement of the members C and D from the pouches B and B.
Alternatively, the apertures E and E may be closed after insertion of the members C and D,
'for instance by sewing, if it is desired to secure the fastening members permanently to the trousers or other garment.
With particular advantage the fastening device according to the invention may be applied to waistbands with flaps made by a press-folding process over a mould or die the shape of which corresponds to that of the abovedescribed plate elements. This process assures perfect accuracy of the shape and size of the flaps as well as of the pouches formed therein. However, the fastening device according to the invention is also applicable to flaps and other parts of Waistbands made by some other method.
In the modified form of the members of the fastening device shown in Figs. 5 and 6, both the hook element C and the eye element D con- 20 and 23 respectively, made for instance of pressed steel. Here again the contour of the ends c and d of the elements C and D, respectively, are shaped to correspond to the shape of the bottom of the pouches B and B of the flaps A and A. V
In Fig. 5 the tongue of the hook member C is designated by 2| and the returned tip which forms the hook proper of the member, by 22.
In Fig. 6 the tongue of the eye member D is designated by 24. As may be seen it is, in this case, formed with two spaced tranvserse bars 25 to which the hook 22 may be attached selectively.
When inserted in the pouches B and B, the members C and D are slightly elastically compressed and thereby keep the flaps or other part of the waistband in taut condition. From this it will be understood that the use of such resiliently compressible members is of particular advantage Where perfect accuracy of the widths of the pouches and of their contours is not assured.
Figs. 7 and 8 shows a further modification of the fastening means according to the invention. In this form the eye member D is similar to the member D shown in Fig. 6, whereas the hook member C differs from the aforedescribed hook members by the provision, between the tongue 3| and the hook proper 32, of an expansion spring 36. As may be seen, the spring 35 is a flat coil spring of the type known for bracelets, armbands and other articles.
In the particular arrangement shown in Fig. 8 only a small section of the flat spring 36 is visible in wear, the ends of the spring being covered by extensions A and A of a waistband H, in pouches B and B of which the members C and D of the device are accommodated. It will be seen that the arrangement shown in Fig. 8 is of sightly appearance and is therefore particularly suitable for use in outer wear of any description, including self-supporting trousers.
The members of the fastening device according to the invention may be made of metal or, alternatively, of any other solid materialfor instance plastic materialor combination of materials.
I desire it to be understood that I do not wish protection by Letters Patent to be confined to the hereinbefore-described details of the fastening device and waistband, since modifications of either are feasible within the scope and ambit of the invention.
Thus the configuration of the members, their parts, and of the flaps or other parts of the waistband, may be varied to meet different requirements,-and changes of fashion.
The fastening device accordin to this invention may be used on any kind of garment and in any appropriate arrangement. It may be used elastic bands and/or strap and buckle devices,
