To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMILE PICKI-IARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Islington, county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Clasps, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to a clasp or holding device, especially adapted among other uses, to be employed for holding together the loose ends of scarfs, fur or feather boas, belts, sashes and like articles.

The present invention has for its obj ect to provide a simple, inexpensive and etficient device, which is capable of adjustment for clasping different thicknesses of material and which is also capable of being repaired or renewed at a minimum expense. For this purpose, I employ a base plate having secured to its back or underside suitable devices for engaging the looped ends of an elastic band or member, one of said looped ends preferably being capable of adjustment to lengthen or shorten the band to fit the clasp to boas, scarfs or like devices of different thickness. These and other features or this invention will be pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.

Figure 1 represents a lady wearing a boa. whose ends are secured together by a clasp or holding device embodying this invention. Fig. 2, is a rear view of the clasp shown in Fig. 1, with the flexible member in its open position, and Fig. 3, a rear view of a modilied form of clasp.

The clasp or holding device herein shown as embodying this invention is provided with a base plate a. of metal or other suitable material, which plate may be oval in shape as herein shown or of any other suitable shape. The plate a has cooperating with its back surface an elastic or extensible member or web 6, which is provided at its opposite ends with loops 0, (Z, which are adapted to receive fastening devices secured to the back of the plate a.

The fastening devices referred to, may be of various constructions and in Fig. 2, I have shown one construction which I may prefer. Referring to Fig. 2, the fastening device which engages the loop 0 comprises a pointed bar or pin 5 provided at one end with a spring coil 6 and having a leg or arm 7, which is soldered or otherwise fastened to the base plate a, said pin having its free end cooperating with a hook or holding member 9, which is fastened to the base plate. The loop 0 may be formed by folding one end of the elastic member I) and securing the folded end by stitching, and the loop '(Z may be formed by folding its end and securing the same to a slide plate or bar 10 of any suitable or usual construction, such as now commonly used on sleeve elastics. The slide plate or bar 10 is capable of being moved lengthwise of the elastic member L so as to shorten or lengthen the same, to conform to the thickness of the ends of the boa or other device 12. The loop (Z cooperates with a fastening device like that cooperating with the loop 0 and comprising a pointed bar or pin 13 provided with a spring coil 14 and with a leg or arm 15, which is soldered or otherwise secured to the base plate a, the said pin cooperating with a hook or holding device 16 soldered or otherwise secured to said base plate.

It will be observed that the elastic member is detachably secured to the base plate by the pins 5, 13, which are extended through the loops 0, (Z, and engaged with the hooks 9, 16. This construction enables the elastic member Z) to be renewed when worn, or to be changed for one of a different color, which may be used to match the boa, scarf or other device whose ends are secured together by the clasp. So also, it will be observed that by making one of the loops as (Z adjustableas to length, the elastic member may be shortened or lengthened to adjust the clasp to boas or other devices of different thicknesses and to compensate for stretch in the web or member 6.

I may prefer to use the fastening devices shown in Fig. 2 for engaging the looped ends of the elastic member, but I do not desire to limit my invention in this respect, as other constructions of fastening devices capable of engaging the loops of the elastic member may be employed, such for instance as that shown in Fig. 3, wherein the fastening devices for the looped member 6 are each provided with two overlapping pins or bars 17, 18, which are capable of being separated to permit the loops to be slipped over one and then over the other of said pins.

The fastening devices which engage the looped member I) are preferably provided with a pointed or sharpened pin, so that in case of emergency, the ends of the elastic member may be pinned together to secure said member to the base.

This construction of fastening device enables a plain piece of elastic Webbing to be used temporarily in case the looped member is worn out or becomes inoperative.

The front of the base plate may be plain or provided With ornamentations, and the fastenin devices for the looped members are preferably secured to the back of the plate between its extreme ends, so that the elastic member I) may be Wholly concealed from View when the clasp is in its operative 15 position, shown in Fig. 1.

Claims.

In a clasp of the character described, in combination, a base plate, an elastic Web provided at its ends with loops, and fastening devices to engage said loops and comprising as pointed spring actuated bars and hooks, substantially as described.
