E. HODALY SUSPENDERS Filea Jan. 22 1924 WITNESSES INVENTOR A TTORNEYS Patented Feb. 17, 1925.
EMERICK HODALY, OFARKANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
SUSPENDER-S.
Application filed January 22, 1924. Serial No. 687,814.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERICK HODALY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arkansas City, in the county of Cowley,
State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to improvements in suspenders, more particularly to fastening means carried by suspenders whereby the length of the suspenders may i be adjusted, andit consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide suspenders having. novel fastening means for adjusting the length of the suspender straps without positioning any part of the fastening means against an underlying garment. a A further object of the invention is to provide suspenders having co-operative fastening elements carried by the body and an end portion of each suspender strap, the cooperative fastening elements being adapted to engage each other to hold the strap securely although releasably in adjusted position.
A further object of the invention is to 30 provide suspenders having co-operative fastening elements carried by the body and an end portion of each Suspender strap for engaging each other to adjust the length of the strap, the co-operative fastening elements having no sharp corners or projections likely to injure an underlying fabric and being adapted to be engaged with or disengaged from each other quickly and easily.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
. Figure 1 is a perspective view showing suspenders embodying the invention in position to support over-alls,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of one of the straps of the suspenders, illustrating particularly the means whereby the strap may be adjusted in length,
Figure 3 is an edge view showing a portion of the suspender strap engaged with a garment, only a portion of the latter being shown, and Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the parts exhibited in Figure 2 with the co-operative attaching elements carried by the strap disengaged.
Referring now to the drawings, the suspender straps are designated 1. Each strap preferably decreases gradually in width toward one end thereof as clearly shown in the drawings, and is provided at the said end with a loop 2.
A relatively narrow strip 3 of a flexible material, such as a suitable fabric is placed upon the outer face of each strap 1, thestrip 3 extending longitudinally of the strap with the lateral edges thereof spaced from the corresponding edge of the strap. The strip 3 is secured to the strap 1 by spaced-apart rows of stitching 4 which extend transversely of the strap, whereby the portion of the strip extending between eachtwo adjacent rows of stitching 4 constitutes a half loop 5 and a series of such half loops extending longitudinally of the strap adjacent to the said one end of the latter thus is provided.
A fastening member, designated generally 6, is carried by the strap at its said one end for engaging with any one of the half loops 5, whereby the effective length of the strap may bevaried. The fastening member 6 comprises two complementary substantially U-shaped sections 7 and 8, respectively, each of which is formed of a length of wire or like material. The section 7 has the ends thereof fashioned to provide eyes, indicated at 9. The section 8 is fashioned at one of its ends thereof to provide an eye 10 which is en aged with one of the eyes 9 of the section whereby the sections 7 and 8 will be swingingly connected. The section 8 is provided at its other end with a hook 11 for engaging with the second eye 9 of the section 7. The web portion of the section 7 extends through the loop 2. The section 8 is adapted to be inserted in any one of the half loops 5 at one end of such half loop and then extended through the half loop until the web portion of the section 8 is disposed in the half loop and the ends of the section 8 are disposed at opposite ends of the half loop. It will be manifest that the fastening mem her 6 and therefore the loop 2 will be attached to the particular half loop 5 through which the section 8 extends when the hook 11 at the free end of the section 8 is engaged with the eye 9 at the free end of the section 7. The effective length of the strap thus may be adjusted at will by placing the attaching; member 6 in engageinenti'withi the: respective half loops 5, selectively. Thepow tion of the strap on which the strip 3Yis.dis-. posed provides a backing for the; half loops and prevents contact of the fastening member 6 With any garment which underlies the; strap.
Each strap 1 may be-zprovided with: an attaching link or ring, such as that indicated at- 12, the attaching linlrbeingarnang'edi to slide on the portion: or the; strap between the proximat'ehalfloop 5and tl1e loop'2 a-nd=1b.eing adaptedtoengage, with ax-button 13 car i ried by a: garment 14.
' bodly i ng the"? invention anch asdescribed'; in
the; foregoingcan befanl tjinstedi to vary; the elfective' length thereof quickly and easily, has a neat appearance, and Wilt'n'ot causel injiiry to any underlying garment;v More over, anyadj u'stmentv of the strap possible because of the operation ofthel fastening means Wi ll'be maintained until a furthen ads.
jnstment of the strap hasbeen: made-as the co operative fastening members will not ac cldentally disengage each ot-hen Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that illustrated inthe. accompanying drawings, and I, therefore, consider as my own, all modificat ionsand adaptations of the form of the device disclosed herein Which fairly fall within the: scope of the; appended claim.
I claim:
In a garment supporting device, strap having aj'loopiat one end thereof andi having a serie's of'halfu loops provided: on the onten faceethereof sai'dz series of halfloops; extend.- ing.longitudinally cfi'said stna'p: and ter-zni: natingratxone end: adjacent to said one end of the strap,- a lihki slidable; on the strap lie-. tween xs-aidi series of' ha lii loopsand the. said one; endofthe; strap; a fastening member for securing said; loop to; any one of said half: loops, said last-named fastening member comprising hr 0, substantially: Ushaped complementary sections; eachejformed of a single length of wine, each. section being hingedly attached; at, oneend; to thez corresponding end; of; theyothersection, and one;
