UNDERGARMENT FOR MEN Filed May 10, 1946 Danie ELY w M i h M M ATTlJRNEYS,
Patented June 21, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to an improvement in undergarments for men commonly known as underdrawers.
Heretofore men's underdrawers have been provided with a front openin or fly, which commonly extends vertically from or above the crotch portion of the garment through the waistband, buttons, or other fastening device, being provided to close the opening and secure the garment in place upon the wearer.
Various modifications, such as the provision of flaps, and the like, have been made in the front opening of such garments, but it is generally recognized that such various forms as have been heretofore produced are not entirely satisfactory and, in general, fail to provide a properly closed center opening and promote discomfort of the wearer due to bad fit and alignment or build-up of the buttons with the buttons of the wearer's trousers.
Now in accordance with this invention an undergarment is provided in which the opening or fly is positioned in a novel manner, so as to be fully closed with use of the usual buttons, or other fastening device, positioned in the waistband at the upper end of the opening, and, at the same time. promotes the complete comfort of the wearer, with no feeling of uneasiness, at all times both from the standpoint of fit and the avoidance of build-up of buttons, especially in the area of the buckle of the wearers belt.
It will be understood that this invention will be adaptable to underdrawers of the usual freefltting type of everyday wear and will be more especially adaptable to so-called shorts, as compared with so-called jockey or supporting type of garment.
Having now indicated in a general way the nature and purpose of this invention, I will proceed to a detailed description thereof with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which there is illustrated a preferred embodiment and in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a pair of shorts embodying this invention with the fly opening closed as the garment is worn.
Figure 2 shows the garment of Figure 1 with the fly opened to enable the garment to be put on.
In Figures 1 and 2 the garment comprises a waistband a, leg portions b, b and a crotch portion 0. The waistband is provided at opposite sides of the garment with ties d, d for adjustment of waistband size.
The fly opening starts at a point above the crotch and at one side of the vertical center line of the garment, and extends up through the teners f, f, or buttons, will be provided in the waistband for securing the garment on the wearer and closing the fly opening. As may be desired, additional fasteners or buttons may be provided below the waistband.
As will appear from an inspection of Figures land 2, the portions of the garment adjacent to the fly opening will overlap when the opening is closed by securing the fasteners f, f.
From the drawings, in the light of the above description, it will now be apparent that in the earment according to this invention the fly opening in its entire extension is off center and preferably curved in its upward extension. As a result the fly opening does not interfere with, or enter into the fit of the garment and, at the same time, convenience is not lessened. Again, the fasteners or buttons are out of line with the trouser fly buttons or fastener, and the belt buckle of the wearer so that build-up is avoided with promotion of comfort, and avoidance of uneasiness promoted by garments with a center fly opening. Finally, the off-center position of the fly opening, the curvature and overlapping of the portions of the garment at the opening insure that it will remain in closed position without gapping when the garment is worn.
What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. An undergarment comprising a waistband, leg and crotch portions, a fly opening extending upwardly on a curve away from the center line of the garment from a point above the crotch portion and to one side of the center line through the waistband and fastening means in the waistband only for securing the garment on a wearer and closing the fly opening.
2. An undergarment comprising a waistband, leg and crotch portions, a fly opening extending upwardly on a curve away from the center line of the garment from a point above the crotch portion and to one side of the center line through the waistband and fastening means in the waistband only for securing the garment on a wearer and closing the fly opening, portions of the garment adjacent to the fly opening being adapted to lie in overlapped relation when the fastening means are secured.
