WAIST BAND FASTENER FOR UNDERGARMENTS Filed May 15, 1935 .r Wa A I v I 2 7 3 He yzryfi rrZgmvEmR ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 11, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE Henry Herrle, New Orleans, La.
Application May 15,
1 Claim.
he invention relates to a waistband fastener for under-garments and more especially to a resilient strap fastener for waistbands of undergarments.
; The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein through the use of a resilient strap carried by a waistband of an under-garment the said waistband can be conveniently fastened and will au- 10 tomatically adjust itself to the body of the wearer of the garment at the waist line and will eliminate discomfort to such wearer and avoid the breaking away of fasteners, as, for example, buttons when engaged in button holes resultant from excessive strain thereon, particularly when the abdomen of the wearer becomes distended.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein button fasteners or the like as conventionally employed with under-garments will be yieldably carried at the waistband of such garment to assure firm fitting of the garment at the waist line of a wearer and at the same time permitting yieldability of the garment and a snug fitting thereof at the waist line.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its operation, readily and easily applied to a garment, strong, durable, self-adjusting, and 30 inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an under-garment showing the fastener constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto, in this instance, there being three fasteners, one in fastening position and the others free.
Figure 2 is a top edge view of the waistband of the garment showing the fastener in fastening position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the fastener yieldably extended.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a body garment, in this instance, representing a pair of shorts which is the present-day type of mens under-garments and is formed with the waistband 5, this garment being created with the front opening 6 carried through the waistband 5 as is conventional.
Joined with the waistband 5 at the outside 1935, Serial No. 21,625
thereof next to the front opening 6, in this instance, is a series of elastic straps I, each at its ends being stitched or otherwise fastened as at 8 to the waistband 5 with the intermediate portion of such strap free of the said waistband and carried by this strap at the proper location is a button 9 adapted for engagement with a companion button hole I0 provided in the waistband 5 for the fastening of the front opening 6 closed.
The series of straps l are located at one end of the waistband 5 next to the front opening 6 although the same may be otherwise located and the straps of this series are arranged in substantially parallel relation to each other and spaced the required distance from one another so that the buttons 9 as carried thereby will be properly located with respect to the button holes Ill companions thereto.
It will appear from Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing that when the buttons 9 are engaged in the button holes ID on the wearing of the garment A by a person when strain occurs at the waistband 5 the straps I yield or give in accordance with the strain and at the same time the garment A will be snugly fastened at the waist line of a wearer about the same and the waistband of the garment will be self-adjustable, the straps l yielding on the distending of the abdomen and thus relieving discomfort to the wearer.
In lieu of the buttons 9 and the button holes other fasteners may be employed in association with the yieldable straps l, the latter being in the form of elastic bands and this is contemplated within the scope of the invention.
Each strap 7 is normally contracted and in this condition fastened to the waistband 5 so that it will be smooth and lying flat against the same and when strain is exerted on the button 9 the said strap becomes extended from the position shown in Figure 2 to the position shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
What is claimed is:
In combination with a nether garment having a waistband and inner and outer fore flaps to close the fly opening thereof, an elastic strap lying against the face of the band with its longer dimension disposed in the direction of the periphery of the band, the strap being carried by the band on the inner flap of the garment but being secured to the band only at the extremities of the strap, and a fastener secured to the outer face of the strap at an intermediate point in the length thereof, the outer flap of the garment having the waistband portion thereof formed with means to engage said fastener, whereby yielding of the waistband to body distension applies a stress to the strap first to but one section thereof and later to both sections of the same.
