J. B. BATT.
BAG FASTENER. No. 247,293. Patented Sept. 20,1881.
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. BATT, OF WILLIAMSVILLE, NEW YORK.
BAG-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,293, dated September 20, 1881.
Application filed June 28, 1831. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. BATT, of Williamsville, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a bag-fastener which shall be operative without the aid of locking devices; and it consists in an oblong endless loop or band of peculiar construction, which is adapted to inclose and securely hold the mouth ofa bag, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel represents a bag with my fastener in position for holding the mouth closed; Fig. 2, a top view of the fastener; Fig. 3, a bottom view, and Fig. 4 a cross-section looking toward the enlarged portion.
The fastener a, which is to be made of any suitable metal and of any convenient size, consists of an endless loop of oblong shape, having the end I) slightly enlarged. The opening or slot in the loop or band corresponds with the shape of the rim-that is, it is made ololong, with one end expanded into a larger curve than the opposite end, the edges of the opening at the sides being for the most part parallel. The rim 0 is made dish-shaped on the under side and beveled on the upper side, with the planes of the bevel converging from bottom to top. With this construction the rim is made nearly plane on its inner and outer surfaces, with a breadth from bottom to top of about one-quarter of an inch.
The fastener is applied to the mouth of a bag in the following manner: When the bag is filled nearly to the top a portion of the mouth is drawn into the loop and placed against the edge of the smaller end of the opening in the loop, so thatthe hem of the bagshallrest upon the upper beveled portion of the rim, and be thereby prevented from slipping out. With the thumb and forefinger of the left hand, which clasp the enlarged end of the band, the fastener-is held firmly in position, while the mouth of the bag is gradually drawn with'the right hand through the enlarged portion of the slot. As the fastener is to be made ofjust sufficient size to inclose the mouth of the bag, as soon as the entire month is thus drawn in, by distributing the gathered folds of the mouth equally along the slot, the upper edge of the rim will engage with the hem of the bag and effectually prevent the mouth from slipping out.
When it is desired to remove the fastener from the bag it is only necessary to exert a little force to withdraw a small portion of the hem, when the fastener may be readily disengaged.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. A bag-fastener consisting in a single oblong metal loop or band having one end expanded into a larger curve than the other, to serve as a handle and to facilitate the insertion of the mouth of the bag therein, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bag-fastener consisting of the endless loop or band a, made in an oblong shape, with one end slightly enlarged, and having its rim dish-shaped on the under side and beveled on the upper side, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN B. BATT.
