Description

I May 24, 1949. c, ACKERMAN 2,471,086
CHILDS GARMENT Filed May 5, 1947 IN V EN TOR.
Cbanlesfldarmaa.
Patented May 24, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to a childs garment. It
has to do, more particularly, with a garment having an easily detached trouser portion which will permit the child to quickly lower the same without too much difficulty.
In childrens play suits and other common garments, the sole support is usually a pair of shoulder straps. In clothes of this type, it is quite inconvenient for the child to relieve himself and this results in the clothes being wet a good bit of the time. This difficulty in removing the clothes is further heightened when the child has a sweater or coat over the shoulder straps necessitating the complete removal of these outer garments, and this is a very distasteful task to most small children. The younger the child, the more difficult it is to train them to disrobe every time they should do so. The removal of the straps, even when not covered by a sweater or the like, is a tedious and time-consuming task and one which the child is very likely to omit unless he is supervised at all times. At the ages of two, three, and four, it is very diflicult for the mother to completely guard the child against his wetting his clothing due to the intense activity of the child.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a garment which young children can operate by means of a zipper and slide to lower the pants or trouser portion away from the waist portion of the garment.
Another object of my invention is to provide a two-part garment connected together by a zipper and slide fastener and located just above the crotch portion of the garment.
Another object of my invention is to provide a childs suit with a circumferential fastening means located just above the crotch portion of the garment to permit the child to easily and effectively lower the pants portion of the suit so as to relieve himself.
Another object of my invention is to provide a two-piece play suit connected together just above the crotch by means of a zipper and slide fastener which can be operated to open merely a portion of the front of the suit or can be completely pulled around the suit to open the suit at both the front and the back.
Another object of my invention is to provide a childs garment which can be detached by means of a zipper but still held at one point so that the zipper can be worked in reverse to connect the pants and blouse together.
Another object of my invention is to provide a childs garment with a zippered fastening means 2 located just above the crotch of the suit to permit the lowering of the pants portion and having a flap member of the same color as the material of the suit for covering the zipper member to give it a finished appearance.
Various objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and appended claim when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a suit constructed according to my invention showing the location of the zipper and slide fastener immediately above the crotch portion of the garment.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the garment in detached position.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the garment shown in Figure 2 having a slight modification in that the zippered portion is covered by a flap member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I show a childs garment, commonly referred to as coveralls, which has a waist portion and a trouser portion. The waist portion 1 has a pair of shoulder strap members 2 and 3 for supporting the entire garment as is shown in Figure 1.
A little more than midway down the waist portion I just above the crotch of the trousers is a 'zipper member 4 and slide fastener means 5, the zipper tracks 4 being attached to both the bottom of the waist I and the top of the trousers 6. The trousers 6 can be almost completely detached from the waist by merely pulling the slide fastener 5 around the midriff on the zipper tracks 4. The zippers 4 are sewed onto the garments by means of a tape or the like and the slide fastener 5 is so positioned that the child can easily operate the same by merely pulling it around the body of the garment. It is believed obvious that the fastener 5 can be pulled around the pants 6 to any degree desired, but that it is provided with a stop I located at one side of the garment which will permit the trousers 6 to hang in the manner shown in Figure 2. In other words, the trousers 6 never become completely disengaged from the Waist portion I.
In Figure 3 of the drawings, we show the identical structure shown in Figures 1 and 2 except that a flap member 8 is stitched to the waist portion I, as at 9, to permit the zippered members 4 to be covered under normal circumstances. This flap member 8 is preferably of the same color as 3 the suit and hides the zipper member 4 and slide 5.
The location of the zipper 4 and fastener 5 is very important to small children since if the trousers are attached higher on the waist, they are likely to become soiled and, therefore, the positioning of the zipper member just above the crotch is very important. The child is able to open merely the front .of the trousers or is able to pull the zipper completely around to the stop member I depending upon his immediate desires. It is equally easy to pull the zipper back in closed position, and thus the trousers =6 can be lowered and raised without the necessity of pulling the Waist and strap members down over the .childs.
shoulders as is necessary in present-day operations. The ease and facility with whichzthetrouser portion 5 can be detached from the waist I encourages the child to remove the pants rather than Wetting in them and this, in effect, trains the child. The flap portion 8 which covers the Zipper and fastener =4 and 5 makes the suit appear to be one of conventional design. Various other objects and advantages will be apparent from the above description, the drawings, and the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A childs garment of the type described comprising a waist portion and a trouser portion, a zipper adapted to support said trouser portion on said waist portion, said zipper being located just above the crotch of the trouser portion, said zipper starting at one side of the garment and extending almost completely. around the garment to a point at such side but spacedirom the starting point to prevent the zipper from completely detaching the trousers from the waist portion, and a flap member secured on the waist portion immediately above the zipper and overlying said zipper so as to hide the said zipper.
