W. DUGKER.
SHOW BOX COVER.
Patented Sept. 13,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. DUOKER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SHOW-BOX COVYER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,873, dated September 13, 1881,
* ApplicationfiledJune7,1881. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM M. DUOKER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Show-Box Oovers and Ido hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, and of its mode or manner of operation, referen ce being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon and making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of boxes or cases for containing merchandise in which the cover is transparent and arran ged so as to display substantially the whole superficial area of the contents of the box or case. Such cases present an attractive appearance in a store or wareroom, and display the articles of sale. themselves, rather than simply an agglomeration of boxes.
The object of my invention is to construct such a box or case with a cover that will at all times display, in appearance, substantially the superficial area of the box and the articles contained therein, while in fact, and to overcome theobjections hereinafter mentioned, itwilldisplay only the articles arranged in the cover itself, and with such coverhinged to the box and adjustable in position when the box is open.
As cases or show-boxes have heretofore been made it has been customary to place a glasslid or cover over them whenit was desired to make their contents visible to purchasers. By such an arrangement the contents of the box are displayed, and at the same time preserved from dust and protected from handling, and while the boxes are filled and the articles neatly disposed in them boxes with transparent covers display their contents satisfactorily; but as the articles are sold from time to time and the contents broken or displaced, the appearance presented through the transparent cover becomes much less attractive, and a row of such boxes or cases about a store with the contents broken and disarranged is unsatisfactory.
I attain the object of my invention by the arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of the upper part of a box or case, showing my invention; and Fig.2isa
longitudinal section.
Similarletters refer to similar parts in both figures.
Ais the box or case, and B is the cover. This cover B consists of a comparatively shallow ancillary box, having its outer face, 0, of glass or other transparent substance, and having on its under side a door or bottom that is preferably hinged to it, as shown at d, andfastened by one or more buttons, 0, or in any other convenient manner.
lnuse the door D is opened, and some of the articles contained in the box and intended to be displayed are disposed and arranged in the space F, forming the ancillary box. D is then closed and fastened upon them, and thus they always present a fresh, orderly, and neat appearance, irrespective of the disposition of the bulk contained in the box itself.
This cover is attached to the case in any convenient manner, preferably hinged, as shown in the drawings, which show it hinged at one end; but it may be hinged at the side or ar ranged as a slide,if desired. When hinged and so arranged that the covevis turned back over its center a catch, E, may be provided to limit its movement. When arranged so tnatit is not turned back over its center it may be kept in position, when open, by ajointed rod, such as is usually employed.
Theunder door or bottom, I), instead of being hinged to the cover, as shown, may be made as a slide and run in rabbets in the inner side of the frame containing the glass O; butl prefer hinging it.
Of course, it it is desired to have the articles disposed in the cover B displayed when that cover is turned back and the box open, the bottom or door D may consist of a frame containing a pane of glasssimilar to the outer face of this ancillary box B.
When desired, the cover B may be disposed to a frame made as a lid to lap over the sides and fit boxes of a series, as cracker-boxes, teachests, or any other boxes generally made of uniform size, as shown at aa. This lid may then be attached to the box by being screwed on or fastened by hooks, or in any other con- The door venient manner, and will thus form a removable cover, which may be used on any box of the series.
I do not claim, broadly, the attaching to a 5 containing box or case of a device exposing a portion of the contents thereof to view, as that is not new; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isto 1. A box or case provided with a cover consisting of an ancillary box having transparent face or faces, and such cover hinged to the box or case and supplied with suitable device for keeping it in position when open, the whole constructed substantially as described, and for 15 the purposes set forth.
2. A lid for a box or case, being a frame to lap over the sides thereof and provided with a cover consisting of a box with transparent face or faces, such cover hinged to the lid and 20 supplied with suitable device for keeping it in position when open, the whole constructed subsubstantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
